Lunch: lettuce, chives, a few cashew nuts, half a tomato, and alfalfa & broccoli sprouts, with cold chicken from the supermarket delicatessen; a spoonful of quince jelly on the chicken, and one of Heinz Salad Cream on the salad.

Silverbeet/Swiss chard chopped, lightly cooked, then mixed with sautéed onion, pine nuts, and currants, and all cooked a little longer.

Grilled Whiting fillets and a simple garden salad of lettuce,tomato,red onion and capsicum with a honey/mustard dressing.

Very finely diced raw vegetables & Salad with Vietnamese dressing, roasted seasoned chicken pieces...

Trout.
Numbah One son is visiting with his two kids. He's teaching them how to fish and to trap game. He's a retired (Gawd, that makes me feel old!) Royal Marine, so is a bit expert at living off the land. They've collectively caught four good sized trout and have snared a brace of rabbit and a hare. Not bad for half an afternoon's work.
Cooked on/in the Abu Röken, smoked with oak grindings from a tree which fell victim to a storm a decade or so ago. Fuel in the burner is hooch made by the local piss-heads in the nearby village during lockdown a couple of years ago.
Our grandkids will never starve! They're of a generation which thinks that food comes out of cardboard and plastic packets, but they both know what proppa food is and how to fetch it and cook it.
As I speak, they're being taught by their Granma how cakes are made. I've been tellt that I should plant a wee plot of sugar beet for next year. I've got a neep grinder which is decoratively situated next to the small pond, so I'm expected to use that to make sugar with that thing somehow. Dunno how that's gonna work next year.
For breakfast tomorrah they'll be having oats stone-rolled by themselves from a sack of grain harvested from a field in line of sight of the house, with raw milk. Sugar, if they want it, will be that peelywally white granular packet stuff from Tate & Lyle.

I have no religious credentials.
Oor ain meenister here, Jim, who's often late for Church nowadays, knows and respects and understands that stuff, can do the finger rectangular thing.
It works all kinds of wonders, aparrently.
The smell of fish oil is something which would require some explaining, I'll grant you that.
Here in Scotland, oor ain Furst Meenister needs only to stare in to her ain knickers to see what she is is.

Whiting is hard to find here, as it's seen as inferior. I much prefer it to haddock as I like the finer flakes. My local fishmonger says he likes it too, but there's not enough demand for him to stock it. Pity.

When I lived in GCI as a teenager, I would regularly catch pollack which we called 'Guernsey Whiting' - absolutely delicious

Tonight is beef mezzaluna; tomorrow is eat out, but Saturday is beef short ribs - 6 hrs in the slow cooker with red wine, beef stock and herbs. Looking forward to that.

For lunch: gurnard fillet baked with chopped tomatoes, onion, mushrooms, and red pepper; mashed cauliflower; with Maldon salt, black pepper, honey-mustard, butter.

All this talk of trout, whiting & gurnard is making me hungry for seafood. I'll have to visit our fish shop for some of their renowned crumbed flathead. Normally, I'd only eat fish I'd cooked myself, but they do two large fillets of lizard, chips & salad for $12, and it's always beautiful & fresh.
Mind you, if you happen to need fish at a busy time, you're likely to have a wait of over an hour. Not a problem if you phone your order in well in advance.
