I need some skilled computerizer to turn this image negative so the text can be read.
I know there is a way to do it but I have no idea how. O:-)

Here
lies the body of
Alexander Nicolson
who being ten years
nine months Gospel in
Holy [Iss? - maybe 'life'] departed
this life the 31 day of Au
gust 1711 and his age 6[3?]

I think.
I believe they use to record the time since he was baptised as well as age.

There is a brief family tree on Ancestry for a Rev Alexander Nicolson born 1646 in Scotland, MA St Andrews 1671, admitted 1678; married Alison Hume in 1685; had three children and died 31 August 1711. However, there are no citations/sources attached to the info.

Rev Nicolson was curate of Preston & Bunkle parishes in the Lammermuir Hills, Borders. According to a comment attached to the tree, Nicolson refused to read the Proclamation of the Estates (Parliament) or 'read prayers for William & Mary, he was rabbled (?) and the charge declared vacant from 6 July 1690.' Presumably, he then moved on to Holy Island.

Holy Island of course being Lindisfarne one assumes (seeing it was Mr D. what posted it).
All generalisations are false, including this one.

From info elsewhere I'm sure it is. I wrote years ago to the National Trust re the opening hours to Lindisfarne Castle. It had stuck rigidly to their usual opening hours regardless of the tides. I'm an Arts & Crafts groupie and it took me several sorts of cunning to get a fix on when I could stay with friends nearby x tides x opening hours. Eventually all things came together. On a visit to Newcastle this w/e managed to pull in a small but interesting exhib at the Laing Gallery on the Arts & Crafts House with pics of the Castle. :)
