I bought an Alexa and it's a hoot.

Anyone living in the wilds of Effrika can skip this thread, it won't mean a thing. o:-)

Today I bought, for Mrs F naturally, an Alexa. Ostensibly it was to provide music without having to fire up the goggle box or a laptop (we don't own a house radio) but within minutes of setting it up I decided to ask it a few probing questions. I mean, what else is a bloke at home alone meant to do?

I've asked (and received 'correct' answers to):

What is the meaning of life? (42, obviously).
Is the Earth flat? ("Don't be stupid, you're a grown man").
Not a question but the statement "These are not the droids you're looking for" elicited the response "These aren't the droids we're looking for".
I also ordered Alexa to open the pod bay doors and she told me she couldn't as she's not HAL and we're not in space.

Any requests?

Alexa...

What is the value of Pi to the last digit?

Same question above for the square root of 2.

What is your bra size?

Point out where Einstein's Constant is in error.

Turn on my electric kettle in the kitchen.

Mow the lawn.

Get me a beer.

Work out the highest V1 obtainable for a 321 at 93T TOW, nil wind, OAT 42C, no obstacles in the T/O flight path, flaps 2, and an ASDA of 2950m with a 150m stopway.

Are brunettes smarter than blondes?

Do you think Siri is a real bitch?

She said "I would if I could but I can't so I won't". :D

Google Home is better IMHO. We have four over two houses. The nice lady also moves into my phone when I am out. Try asking 'did you fart ?' She frequently blames it on the dog who can be heard in the background.

I have 3 Echo Dots, the one 3rd generation has better sound. My kindle fire also has Alexa. Now that was big surprise when we discovered it had a microphone as three had been nothing in the instructions.

The Mrs PN doesn't like her but does use it out for radio and setting reminders.

I have fitted smart plugs to all our table lamps etc.then i can switch them on by command and also while away from home. Better though i have set different groups to come on and off but timer. Should i want them off earlier a Good Night call does trick and she wishes me a good night too. Good morning also sets in train a sequence.

I bought an Alexia and it has been relaying my family's conversations back to Amazon and God knows who else ever since!

Caco,

You should have bought a Dyslexia - would have garbled your conversations.
It's always my fault - SWMBO

My blind mate bought an Alexa, but she can't handle it when he gets pissed and talks Braille.

" Alexa, why is Trump an asshole ? "...just ask her the question..the response is "interesting "..

In response to one of her more inane replies "Alexa, are you stoned out of your mind ? ".....she gets a shade upset and emphatically denies any form of recreational drug usage .

Strangely, cough !, the dulcet tones of Sam Cooke are not available singing "A change is gonna come "..in her music library

"What is the terminal velocity of a sparrow?"

Well firstly she corrected me and said that it's a swallow (Monty Python) and then explained that it's 10 metres per second.

So, yes. She's just like a wife.

A buddy of mine has one near his phone/answering machine and when he's home he screens all of his calls, letting them go to the machine.

I have been bothering him a bit lately by calling him and then waiting until the recording starts and then yelling "ALEXA, Play Van Halen, Volume 10.
