Where Did the Universe Come From? And Other Cosmic Questions: Our Universe, from the Quantum to the Cosmos by Geraint F. Lewis and Chris Ferrie.

Geraint Lewis' material is superb as is his video documentary channel.

Was talking to a good friend who had recently been talking to an old friend about a mutual friend of theirs who had who had gone down the EO route after the end of South Africa's wars in SWA and Angola back in the day, and who had disappeared during the battle for Soyo in 1992. It appears that this missing chap met a rather grisly end as outlined in this book which I bought and haven't put down since.

War Dog: Fighting Other People's Wars: The Modern Mercenary in Combat by Al Venter.

Talking of grisly ends they don't get more grisly than this.. Robert Mackenzie. The unfortunate Mr MacKenzie was not associated with the people noted above but is another character whose career is covered in the book I am reading.

"Spare" has landed with an electronic thud in my library app.
I shall commence reading and report any nausea or other adverse reactions as the might appear. :ymsick:
I think that I already know how it ends but I will attempt to get through to the end nonetheless. :-ss

MrsWoody actually ordered a copy for her Kindle, so that I wouldn’t have to see a copy in the house, guess who gets the confirmation email for the purchase :((

I initially misread PHXPhlyers' post as being about Spare Rib" and thought "I didn't have old PHX down as a proto-feminist, but good for him anyway!" =))

Finished it yesterday evening.
Didn't know whether to post the results here, on the Sussex thread, or Rant of the Day. All relevant. :-?
The book is basically two parts.
Part One: Drugs, Sex (intimated), and Rock and Roll (or what passses for him)
Part Two: Saint Megan (Makes Mother Teresa look like The Wicked Witch of the West)

Spoiled could be the sub-title. :ymdevil:
Jetting off to Bots with girlfriends/buddies or wherever else the mood took him. Always with bodyguards in tow.
Such a poor delicate soul to boot. :((

Actually, it wasn't that painful.
All I had to do was to read it as a fairytale and also to remember whose perspective it was (ghost) written from.
All "Poor me" and "it's everyone else's fault".
No acceptance of any blame whatsoever.

Wondering whether anyone has read or would enjoy this book; I came across a reference to it on an unrelated site and it seems to be well-regarded by those who have read it:

Carrier Pilot by Norman Hanson, a review here:

I have always been fascinated by the life and career of John "Jacky" Fisher Admiral of the British Fleet, an extraordinary naval reformer, moderniser, futurist, technologist, strategist and man. This book by an equally unique human being, Jan Morris, is superb. Still reading it but highly recommend it to the house.

Admiral of the Fleet Lord 'Jacky' Fisher (1841-1920) was one of the greatest naval reformers in history. He was also a colossal figure to contemporaries, both loved and loathed, a man of exceptional charm, presence and charisma. Since the late 1940s, Jan Morris has been haunted by his face - with its startling combination of 'the suave, the sneering and the self-amused.' This evocation is both biography and a love letter, a perfect expression of her passionate interest in mavericks and outsiders, in travel, ships and the glorious pageantry of the British Empire in its prime.

Currently reading and enjoying this...

GW.JPG

Wrigley an ex-Rhodesian Air Force, pilot who later flew with the Fleet Air Arm, and multiple types with sundry other outfits in varied places around the world, has put together a number of vignettes or stories culled from his varied career. The following story about flying with the famous (some might say infamous) "Court Helicopter" outfit, which was later amalgamated withCHC Helicopter, in Cape Town rings true to this reader who often marveled at the weather they went out. In this instance a marked lack of CRM and basic IFR procedure discipline nearly resulted in disaster on the slopes of Signal Hill.

Just finished "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman. :-bd
The movie version is "A Man Called Otto" starring Tom Hanks. Having seen a trailer for the movie before I read the book, Tom Hanks was Ove. All the time reading the book I could totally see Hanks as the character.
I now look forward to watching the movie which I have complements of my local library. ^:)^

Most interesting.
