RIP Carlos Reutemann - hell of a driver on his day

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/57757338
Amen. Saw him win the South African Grand Prix in 1974. My dad dropped me and my brother at Kyalami for the afternoon. I was 12 and my brother was 6. My old man was like that. "You want to do something, then do it, but don't expect me to mollycoddle you!". He was right, it was a great afternoon and wonderful to see the imperious Argentinian win.

The sad news of Carlos Reutemann's death got me to thinking about his other South American contemporaries that were racing in or around his era in F1, people like Emerson Fittipaldi, his brother Wilson and Carlos Pace. I was a big fan of both Emerson Fittipaldi and Carlos Pace, who seemed to likely to pick up the Fittipaldi mantle, but sadly it was not to be as he was killed in a light aircraft accident. Fittipaldi was very luck to survive an ultralight aircraft crash later in his life.

The only thing vaguely interesting is tire wear and pit stops. Take those out, and yawn. Why don't they try figure eight racing, field divided into two, crossing in the middle? Hednesbury (?) Hills Stock Car racing, in the old days...

OFSO, and install random potholes that open up during the course of the race. Have a cycle race at the same time and add some autonomous Tesla cars to ginger things up

Twas but a touch but Verstappen will remember that big bang in the future so despite the inevitable penalty (so tedious) Hamilton might have just made his mark on the Kaaskop's mind.

Great idea by the way. Fit the cars with missiles... =))

Verstappen certainly became the ultimate unguided missile after that touch although some will claim that Hamilton was the misguided missile. :)

The bloody presenters are such tedious twerps. Mr Boring Coulthard and the bloody Aussie... neither of whom who ever had what it took to win a world championship, both pontificating like two old women. :ymdevil:

The initial contact resulted in the right rear tyre coming off the rim.

Tyres under max sideways force at +-180 miles an hour into Copse. The merest touch would have caused it to fail. I don't think it was intentional (not in a Michael Schumacher kind of way, anyway) but Hamilton had a "Banzai" moment and it was good to see some real racing. Last time I saw anything as "interesting" was when Jody Scheckter caused mayhem at Woodcote back in the 70's.

Absolute disgrace that Hamilton won.

Penalty not anywhere near sufficient. The stewards are clearly not fit for purpose this season. Either too hard at some meetings and too lenient at some, as today proved.

It was a Black Flag job. Were they afraid of him playing the "race card" if they had been harder?

A black flag for Hamilton would have meant 'no race'.

They have to consider the spectacle.

No it wouldn't G-CPTN

A black flag accompanied by a car number is shown to a driver to signal their disqualification from the race.

Whilst he is a first-class driver, Verstappen is also an aggressive bully. Hopefully today will have taught him there's one driver who won't take any of his sh*t any more.

Personally I think the crash was Verstappen's fault, but I'm in a minority. At worse it was a racing incident, not worth a penalty. Didn't watch to the end, turned over to ITV4 to watch real sportsmen.
