Re: Formula One
Lars,the Italians and wine.
When Alain Prost drove for Ferrari and his car was a bit off the pace he made the mistake of suggesting that Ferrari stop serving Lambruco to the staff at lunch time.
The French at Eurocopter in the nineties were no better.I was doing emergency training in Marignane with the EC test pilots and found that when we stopped for lunch they all drank a half a bottle of wine and then happily went out and carried on with the training flights after lunch.

Re: Formula One
I have lived and worked in Italy for about 10 years.
They have a totally different attitude to alcohol.
They use it but rarely abuse it.
Some of that time was spent with the IAF. A standard midweek lunch would be: retire to the bar next to the dining hall. Drink apperitivo. Eat a light three course meal with a couple of glasses of wine. Go to bar. Drink digestive. Go to flightline. Fly F104.
Having said that, I rarely saw a drunk Italian.

Italians...
In my tour pilot days it became possible to stereotype the various nationalities.
The Germans, Brits, and Japanese all lined up and sat where you put them. The FFrench just shrugged as they pretended to not understand any English, so had to be hand guided to their seats.
The Italians...you just opened the doors and got out of the way. The only upsides to them were that the women were almost always decent looking, and most were of modest size, unlike the Brits and Germans.

One sees very few haughty, impeccably chic Italian girls at Silverstone, unfortunately. An interesting description that - I've never got on with Italian women for some reason. Most other nationalities, yes, but not Italian. Mind you, I can't be doing with haughty women, I like 'em rough and ready

Once, in Malta, we popped into an hotel on the west side of the island, one with a lift to the beach, and near the nudist beach. It was exclusively for the Germans.
The dining room doors were secured with a strong chain and padlock.
Re: Formula One
Jeddah is just to dangerous a track-I had a feeling after Latifi wrecked that there were still going to be more.
Schumacher crash was straight into a solid concrete wall.

Re: Formula One
Watched the qualies last night and it looked like they were driving around a prison exercise yard. What's with the high barriers and wire? At least on other circuits, especially in Europe, the worst thing that's going to happen is that you'll run into a bale of old tyres.Seenenough wrote: ↑Sat Mar 26, 2022 5:52 pmJeddah is just to dangerous a track-I had a feeling after Latifi wrecked that there were still going to be more.

Could be something to do with the missile attack 8km away? What's with the high barriers and wire?

I have a sneaking feeling that they might have been expecting 'trouble' for a while.

Friend of mine has been working in Saudi teaching maths to would be Saudi pilots. Their base, ostensibly safe was hit twice by missiles last year.
Back to the grid I see Verstappen is in 4th place???

Re: Formula One
I stopped watching F1 a few years ago as it became boring. But I do show an interest from time to time. This F1 in Saudi Arabia seems to me to be dangerous and should be ditched.
RAF 32 Sqn B Flt ; Twin Squirrels.
Re: Formula One
It seems that F1 is continuing with racing at Jeddah under a bit of duress as the Saudis have told them that if they do not race that everyone and all equipment will be prevented from leaving.
I'm sure once the whole show is safely out of the country we could find F1 making much stronger statements than they are at the moment.
Not only is the environment dangerous but more are feeling that the confined layout with very high speed corners that are blind is is also becoming a problem now that they have seen the big hit Schumacher took yesterday.I'm sure we are going to see more heavy wrecking in the race.

Not even mentioned on TV news here. With only pay-per-view, F-1 are pricing themselves out of existence.

Re: Formula One
Just looking at last year's race on C4 and the high barriers were in place then. If the whole thing is so dangerous, it shouldn't be held there/.

Re: Formula One
I wonder with what he shot himself. Did he have an unlicensed weapon?
We had a neighbour on Scotland with Parkinsons and aware that he was becoming a burden to his wife. He drove off into the hills north of Inverness in the depths of winter and drank a bottle of scotch and the car door open.
No physical mess but still awful for his wife.
