The turbine in the turbocharger of a typical domestic vehicle spins at speeds of up to 150,000 rotations per minute, so 170,000 for an F1 engine is not unthinkable.

Our 100,000rpm turbine was under 4 inches in diameter. Of course, by the time you put all the other crap around it for efficiency it was huge, but the business end was tiny. I guess that's sort of true for jet engines too, the large bit is just the fan on the front, the actual hot end is quite small in comparison. The shafts have to be really well balanced to run that fast.

For my retirement I was presented with a V2500 4th Stage Turbine Blade polished to a mirror finish and mounted on an Oak plinth. The fourth is the penultimate turbine stage so the next to largest blade in the turbine and is 13cm long. The compressor blades are larger.
It's a prized possession.

We had a member at TOP called LaserNigel (IIRC) whose job was peening (shot-blasting) turbine blades.
Last heard of pursuing a (Filipino?) girl with marriage in mind.

You are correct - he moved on to that as an engineer that after the peening job.

RR turbine blades were made from Nimonic alloys from Henry Wiggin of Hereford.

I was involved with the 1st computer they had, for controlling creep furnaces. c1967

When RR went bust in 1971 it upset things.

The fact that Williams and a part of McClaren are up for sale should indicate to us all that F1 is on a road to nowhere.

Lewis Hamilton blasts British society's 'implicit' racism, says he is continually accused of 'not being British enough' and reveals he has been target of racist abuse since he was eight
Perhaps it's because of his behaviour, the way he speaks, and his appearance, and I don't mean the colour of his skin, that he's been targeted.

AIUI, Lewis is only half black - and, therefore, half white.
That he chooses to project himself as black, the disadvantages can't be that bad.

Lewis Hamilton's mother is of course white and his father is black. Some years ago, he chose to go and live in Switzerland. One of the reasons he gave, (people never give tax reasons for living in Switzerland do they, was to avoid the media in the UK) From Wiki: Hamilton announced his intention to live in Switzerland in 2007, stating that this was because he wished to get away from the media scrutiny that he experienced living in the UK.

But as soon as the opportunity arises, he gets on the back of the BLM carnival and starts telling anyone who listen that he's supporting the movement. I have previously written in support of LH, but this has changed my mind. He is yet another publicity hound, using whatever means he can to keep his name in the public eye, possibly since there has been no F1 action so far this season and he (or his agent) is afraid that people will forget who he is.

Another example along similar lines: Phil Collins married his third wife, Orianne Cevey, a Swiss national whom he met on tour and who worked as his translator? in 1999. The question mark is mine. Since when did a member of a pop group ever need a translator? They lived in the former house of Jackie Stewart in Begnins, Switzerland. In 2006, Collins announced their intention to separate, which was followed by their divorce in 2008. Collins paid £25 million to Cevey, which became the largest settlement in a British celebrity divorce and continued to live in Féchy, Switzerland, while he also maintained homes in New York City and Dersingham, Norfolk.

Let's hope they don't overheat in warmer climates.

Mini-Coopers had white roofs as in the manner of aircraft of the day so there's gotta be a good reason for reflective colour schemes on heat-generating machines.

But WTF do I know, I'm just old, bitter and twisted...
