I don't understand why they use these wheeled crane things which are very slow and have the vehicle swinging all over the place.
'Wheeled cranes' are essential for recovering crashed vehicles from grassed areas or bogged in gravel.
Because Mugello is primarily used for motorbike racing they don't have adequate gaps in the barriers (as was seen when they failed to get a car through a 'gate' and had to bring a crane to lift it over).
I have never seen a wheeled crane used at Silverstone, no matter how bad the accident. I'm not saying they never use them, but I've seen a few bad accidents there in my time, and never seen a wheeled crane used. However, if the grass/gravel was wet, they would have to use some other method of recovery I imagine, but normally it's just a standard flat-bed truck and bit of pushing and shoving.

You'd think that someone would have done a bit of risk assessment at Mugello, especially when most of the drivers were not familiar with the track other than virtually.

Silverstone is 'flat' which means no gradients.

Are there gravel traps - or is it currently all flat run-off areas?

There are a few gravel traps - and grass and yes, to be fair, the run-off areas are almost all flat, so I guess we're looking at a different set of circumstances. It just seems a bit Heath Robinson to me in this day and age - maybe there's a business opportunity there... :))

Risk assessment ? Aforethought ? Planning ? Suitable equipment? Hey, this is Italy, remember. The country which places warning signs on the left of the track when the pit lane opens on the right...

I agree - there should be a rule introduced that all 'appearances' are made in non-political clothing. Fine breakers.

Why can't sports people stick with getting on with performing to their best ability playing their particular sport? Why do they feel that they have the right to use the publicity to bash away at whatever cause they believe in? Maybe Hamilton should just get on with doing what he is good at; winning races and stop this teenager t-shirt cr@p.

Rant over. :D

How do you feel about Putin insisting all the drivers stand at attention by their cars while he presides over the playing of the Russian national anthem? I know that, while I am a polite person who would remain quiet while a national anthem was being played, I would be apt to give the Russian poisoning pervert the finger!

Humans are political creatures though and expecting people to avoid political commentary is probably unreasonable. I find it hard to see how F1 sees it reasonable to give credibility to some of the **** Middle Eastern states they visit save for the lure of mammon.

Dress and car, crashed into a wall with me as a passenger, into a stone wall by my English half sister in Leicestershire. The need for speed on snowy country roads. The Duchess of Hazard... :)
