She did have a form of insurance, being escorted by an RN warship does improve one's chances of making it through.

Being escorted through checkout chez Morris et Fils by gentlemen from a former cookery school closely adjacent to the Welsh border, or those guys from Lympstone, might also assist one's chances, but I really don't think it's necessary. Especially when one has empty trolley/pockets.

Insuring a 610,000 barrel cargo on such a voyage plan might bust Pusser's budget, though.

Just seen the ticker, Iranians seized a foreign tanker today.

Seems rather more to this. Probably the tanker that disappeared in Sunday and is now accused of smuggling oil. Seizure as in legal arrest.

Reports remain confused. Most seem to think that this is another ship, also Panamanian registered, which had been collecting fuel just offshore from smuggling Iranian dhows. One Iranian government statement refers to one million litres, which is on the limit of the Riah's capacity, I believe. If so, then this would really be an internal Iranian matter and nothing to do with legitimate oil traffic through the Straits of Hormuz.

The current ownership of the Riah has not been established
https://ca.reuters.com/article/topNews/ ... C19L-OCATP

On the other hand, the recent routing of the Riah shows it moving to and fro through the straits without putting into port. Picking up smuggled oil in the straits and transferring it to other vessels outside the straits is one possible interpretation of this behaviour. The unknown and recent changes of ownership also tend to support the idea that something dodgy is going on.

Iranian drone shot down by USS Boxer when it approached within 1,000 yds of the ship and the operators refused to turn it away.

Dunno. I assume Iran builds 'em cheaper.

Anyway with each losing a drone t'other shouldn't it balance out the political Yin 'n Yang now?

Um sorry wait a minute...🙄

I am very surprised it was not being escorted.

Update:
Looks like the Iranians may have got a second
There were also concerns about a second oil tanker, the British-operated, Liberian-flagged Mesdar, which turned sharply north towards Iran's coast, about 40 minutes after the Stena Impero's course shift.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/0 ... -tensions/

Update to update:
Confirmed, the Iranians have it.

As best I can tell, they are both in ballast, and both have Brits in the crew.

Betting on an American military response would probably not be money wasted.
The reports I've read reckon that the Grace 1 was impounded by the UK on a US request, and the Iranians have stated that this would be their response to that.
Thoughts?

It is always a good idea to get supposed allies implicated on your side before starting something really big.

Thought is that the Iranians have provided a sound internationally approved reason to get their backsides kicked. Their only leverage is the crew-member hostages.

The cavalry may be on the way - a second RN ship appears to be zooming down through the Canal as we write! That will keep the Iranians in check.... :-?

More seriously, are ships still transitting without any protection, knowing full well that the Iranians would be taking this action as soon as the opportunity presented itself?

The Liberian vessel has been released to continue its voyage.
It would appear to be a straight tit-for-tat for the Grace 1.
The sensible option would appear to be for both vessels to be released by the respective sides ASAP.

It doesn't look like the good old EU will assist the UK (they only seem to have blamed the Americans for the situation so far) in enforcing the EU sanctions on supply of oil to Syria, so to avoid the UK ship being held to ransom for ever in Iran I'd have to agree with Fox3.

The Stena Impero's owners would seem to be solely responsible for this state of affairs and have made the UK government look fools in the face of Iranian aggression - not that hard to do these days - after the highly embarrassing capture and display of RN people a few years ago.
