Not all black folks are like that 500N although your point has merit in the light of the economic basis for poaching for which market the Chinese are hugely responsible in Africa.

I agree not all black folks are like that but I have seen /read where give them an economic interest i the welfare of the animals
and all of a sudden, they take an interest. Even if it is only a small $ amount that comes from hunting or whatever, at the moment
they get nothing.

Look at it in the reverse way - Elephants (and other animals) are shot under the PAC "system", (problem animal control).
Elephants raid their crops etc (often due to loss of habitat), problem animals are shot. Because the blacks have an
economic interest in the crops. In some areas, PAC animals where possible are sold to a hunter to shoot - they are
going to be killed anyway so they might as well get some money for it.

Maybe we should just shoot more people... Now there's an idea!

Maybe I should post this under 'Darwin Awards'. Someone who made his living out of destroying wildlife for profit and for the pleasure of others was crushed by an elephant. I have considerable sympathy for his family and friends, and a limited amount for him. Very limited.

South African safari leader and big game hunter Theunis Botha, 51, crushed to death Friday afternoon when an elephant was shot and fell on top of him in Gwai, Zimbabwe. Botha was out hunting with a group when they came across a breeding herd of elephants and started shooting. They spooked the animals, causing the elephants to start to run at the hunters. One of the elephants is then said to have picked up Botha with its Trunk. A member of his group shot the elephant, hoping it would let Botha down. Instead, the wounded and dying animal fell on top of him, agonizingly crushing him to death.

In fact it wouldn't be accurate to post this under the Darwin section as it appears Mr Botha succeeded in reproducing before his untimely demise. As you say, although one feels some sense of sympathy for his family, it is hard to feel anything for the man himself.

Who shoots elephants in this day and age apart from abominable poachers and ignorant savages?

The report I posted came from a sensationalist rag ...... you can guess which one. Although I stand by my original comments, there is a somewhat less dramatised account in the Telegraph :
Theunis Botha, 51, was leading a hunt with clients when the group accidentally walked into the middle of a breeding herd of elephants at the Good Luck Farm near Hwange National Park late on Friday afternoon, Zimparks spokesman Mr Simukai Nyasha said.
Three of the elephant cows charged the hunters. Mr Botha fired a shot from his rifle but he was caught by surprise by a fourth cow that stormed them from the side, the Afrikaans news site Netwerk24 reported.

I would suspect that 'walking into a herd of breeding elephants' was either an act of supreme stupidity, or was motivated by his greed.

And on the Good Luck Farm, too. That's way too ironic for me.

I got no time for these big game hunters who kill for sport and profit - such is the arrogance of the human animal. I only kill for either food (bunnies mainly) or pest control. Otherwise I let them live. What other justification could one have for snuffing out other life forms which are either of no practical use dead or do no harm?

Having said that though, I dimly recall as a wee kid (christ...was I ever that young?) reading in a Readers Digest Omnibus (for kids) of a game hunter who was contracted to blow away a huge rogue bull elephant that was terrorizing African villages. I only remember the name of his local guide - Seisa.

After quite a number of locals were slain by the bull in the area, the hunter tracked him down and killed him dead - perhaps the only justified kill by a white man. After examination of the dead beast the hunter found an old bullet lodged in the tusk, the pain from which must've driven the bugger insane over the years. Like camels, elephants have long memories so he probably regarded all humans as a bunch of total cnuts.

Whilst this hunter's actions were justified in preserving life, the original hunter who stuck that bullet in his tusk should've been tied up to a tree and flogged.

Botha? One less human that harmless animals have to worry about.

Glad to see that three cretins were gored by bulls at the San Fermin 'fiesta'.
Funny how the EU hasn't been able to stamp out this cruel exploitation of animals.

I have many happy and fond memories of numerous visits to Malta, I celebrated my 18th birthday down the Gut, and more recently escorted missus om around the various pleasant sights in Valetta.
I have a deep and non negotiable loathing, contempt and disgust for the Maltese who derive their pleasures from hunting sparrows with high calibre sub machine guns, also those vile and contemptible Italians that target migrating geese, eagles and other impressive birds with anti aircraft guns for sport.
As you say, we are in fear of consuming bananas of the wrong shape or size, whilst the foreigners that demand our slavish obedience to the their own Stalinist regulations continue with their own 16th century bloodthirsty and disgusting practices, let us pray for many more fatalities amongst the foreigners.

TD, but look at the way the British are forced (I admit, by their own governing powers) to stick to the rule and letter of the EU regarding EU citizens working in the UK; whereas the Spanish have designated around a dozen or more categories of work which are forbidden to any except Spanish-born Spanish: EU citizens are not allowed. And you won't find it written down anywhere, but even those Spanish-born citizens must have a white (or nearly) skin.

One of the biggest rows I ever had back in TOP days was with Flaps Forty over the subject of bull fighting which I abhor! She did become very angry POSTING LIKE THIS =))

Too much Ernest Hemmingway and not enough respect for living creatures imbues the supporters of such abominations.

Just popped in to see how things were going here and was surprised to see this thread resurrected. Reminded me of how unpleasant one of the animal killers was. Has he really been banned? If so, I might come back a bit more often.

Two members of a poaching gang are shot dead by South African policeand three more arrested after six rhinos were killed in just 24 hours in a wildlife park.
The suspected poachers were mowed down after being ambushed and outgunned in the early hours of Sunday morning in a huge offensive against the gangs devastating wild rhinos in South Africa.
So far this year, 142 rhinos have been killed in KwaZulu-Natal alone with a confirmed death toll of more than 20 the weekend before last.
Six of the rhinos were killed at just one park in less than 24 hours.

Wonderful. I hope it wasn't a clean shot and that they had time to suffer and reflect. I am of course referring to the poachers.
