Misuse of English as she should be spoken.
A thread for those common mistakes, incorrect phraseology, misuse of English or even grammatically correct usage that makes you grind your teeth.
Aircrafts - as in the plural rather than using the correct term, namely aircraft. (Irritation rating - Toe curling and very irritating)...
Inputted - as in "he inputted data into the FMC". (Irritation rating - Very irritating despite the fact that this is actually grammatically acceptable)...
Finals - as in the radio call "Barn Burner Heavy is on finals" when what he meant was on final approach. (Irritation rating. Incandescent)...
I could go on ad nauseam. Do others have any other examples...?

TripAdvisor deserves its own thread :
There was a separate bowl of mush (‘veg’) which had brownish pees and then some bright green pees that had been added .......
The manager on shift was quite short looked british and was a total tool........
Even though the sun was shinning, it was dark and gloomy inside
I'll dig out some real howlers in due course. I have actually seen 'our steak Tartar was raw'.

There, They're & Their ..........I see the three used incorrectly all the time...yes I hate it!
An (No, actually several when I think about it) English Colleagues on Japanese clients: "They speak relly good English!"
ME: Surely you mean 'they speak english very well'
Being English, and having a go at us for all manner of things, they hate that line!, pulling them up on their very own misuse of their own language.

Less and fewer, the confusion makes me go Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!
I saw a supposed English teacher on TV talking about there being less teachers in her school this year, what chance do the kids have?
When did eight year old children become students and not pupils?

Very popular on Social Media:
"We use to go there"
I will sometimes comment with the one word "used".

A slight thread drift: I did a long walk up the Thames today and what struck me more than anything was the two predominant languages I heard:
- on public transport, African languages
- on building and construction sites, dockyards and all staff in pubs: Polish.
Never heard any misused English. Or used English, come to that.

Woman, when they mean Women, e.g. " This will benefit all woman". Very common in NZ Media comments.
I don't think there are any women on New Zealand.

Misuse of 'less' when 'fewer' is appropriate also upsets me, as does the apparent use of 'student' instead of 'pupil'. Even worse, our state education authority decreed that 'learner' should replace 'student' in all documents. Some idiot went through the subject notes for statistics, and changed all references to the 'Students T test' to 'Learners T test'.

It makes me sew inimitably heppy Mr PM that your good self elucidates the English language so eloquently (Including parsing where apropos) as that of the Eton edewcated.Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2019 1:22 pmObvious 'init. Times, as in "three times bigger than". Five is two bigger than three, i.e. two plus three. Four times three is twelve. Four times bigger than three is therefore three plus twelve = fifteen. Twelve is four times AS BIG AS, not bigger than, three.
And WTF is "three times less than"? One time less than a number is zero, three times less than must be minus two times it.

67% of . . .
73%
Will give 110%
What's wrong with two thirds or two in three? What's wrong with nearly three quarters? Or don't we teach fractions any longer?
"I'll have 25% of the cake please"
" I could only eat 60% of that but it was delicious. "
"What do you mean? Only one tenth more effort, double your effort woman."

Fractions, too often I hear "three times smaller" instead of one third etc.

Not really fair because it is a translation from Greek but our English teacher neighbour on Amorgos always gets annoyed about the announcement on the ship approaching an island. 'If xxx island is your final destination, please get ready to disembark'. She says that it is not her final destination, she has no intention of dying there.
'Yes, Madam, I am drunk, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly.' Sir Winston Churchill.
Re: Misuse of English as she should be spoken.
Peninsula, derived directly from Latin and meaning "almost an island" in English, is a NOUN. Peninsular, with an "r" on the end, is an ADJECTIVE, i.e. as used in "the Peninsular War". Yet many educated individuals use the adjective as both noun and adjective, including one or two here. Coo, how wicked can you get?

I dunno if it’s a valid gripe. The CFM-56 has a limitation of 104% N1 and 105% N2. I spose I should ask some knowledgeable bugger why not just recalibrate the bloody instruments to 100% and be done with it.
