Good UK airfield food?

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Tue Oct 08, 2019 5:18 pm

I was wondering if any of the folks here know of any UK GA airfields that have a half decent restaurant? My previous experience of the same in the past has been disappointing with dud sandwiches and greasy breakfasts being the best that was being served! Surely there must be somewhere where one can savour some good cuisine on this Sceptred Isle!

Don't go to Perth airfield (UK) hoping for some food on a Sunday because the cafe is closed as Caco and I found out to our cost. Sywell used to be good but I haven't been there in many a long year.

The Hummingbird restaurant at Shoreham changed hands and now serves some excellent, reasonably priced grub. Scores highly on Trip Advisor I note.

Turweston, beautiful restaurant under the tower, panoramic views, balcony dining on a sunny day. Used by locals as an endorsement.

The Aviator at Staverton is popular with locals too.

Sywell is still pretty good, I used to stay in the Aviator twice a year, good draught beers, good evening meal, super fried breakfast, also used to have lunch regularly at Staverton when I worked for Eurojet there.

If you like chips Lydd Airport is OK.

Redhill does a good range of pub food; not your fine dining but a cut above the average and popular with the locals as well. That may be a good thing or not depending on your preferences but it surely says something good about the food, price and service.

Ah it is good to see some local advice on these aviation eateries. I appreciate the input.

The only eatery mentioned in that list that I have tried is the one at Lydd where I once did a bad weather divert en route to the UK from Guernsey only to be told that the restaurant had just shut. Cold wet and hungry I was! ;)))

Regarding Compton Abbas, the restaurant overlooks the strip and has a fantastic view across Blackmore Vale, here is the menu,

Kirkwall airport had a small cafe which was OK. However, according to their website:
Please be aware that limited refreshments will be available from 5 October 2019 due to a cafe refurbishment. Customers will still be able to purchase hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, sweets and crisps.
We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.
