My lovely feathered friends..

#1 Post by Fliegenmong » Sun Nov 17, 2019 6:17 am

Most every evening I am home I put out a sugar honey bread and water mixture for these little guys....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_lorikeet

And goodness me are they NOISY! Screaching and skwarking and carrying on!, but its still a lovely thing and I'll have 35 - 40 of them in the backyard and a similar amount in the front yard all in a feeding frenzy!..beautiful birds though...and around about 3:30pm local you can hear them arrive in the nearby trees demanding to be fed! =))

Bad person. "Sugar honey bread and water" is the last thing you should feed them. It rots their teeth plus other problems.

They're pretty cool. We have them around here, they love the banksia & bottlebrush. We don't feed them, but we do have a few other breakfast visitors.

Correct, Karearea. The rosellas like to eat the grevillea & bottlebrush seeds, and also like to bite the flowers off the bottlebrush. The galahs usually eat on the ground - not sure what they eat from it.

The other two are a kookaburra and a male king parrot.

Naw! A Kookaburra is a cricket ball.

I've got one, I got a hat trick with it.

That may be the safest way to cook your snags if there are kookaburras around, John. They are well known for stealing from the barbecue.

I was unaware that Rainbow Lorikeets had teeth....not sure any bird has teeth?

They've actually been feeding them the same mix at this place for more than 60 years!...

Heard this guy nurdling away in my front yard, but didn't recognise his song. Took a while to find him. He's a baby butcher bird. Place is turning into a feckin' nursery.

perhaps not Hydro....we also have a family of Kookas that live in the surrounding area....I like to think they are the reason (touch wood) I have never encountered a snake here, though surely they must be around!

These were taken at my old place. Where I am now we get blue headed finches in large numbers.

Mr and Mrs Robin have taken up residence in our front yard, as usual in winter. He is a fierce little bigger, defending his territory regardless of size of the enemy.

And so they're back again this afternoon...in addition to the feeder out the back yard I also have a large pot plant tray hanging from wire in the front yard, about 1.5 meters away from this computer. I don't know if the fly screen plays tricks with their eyes, but I can sit here, and they carry on as if I can't be seen

It's really a very lovely thing, and funny to watch...when the feeder is full they queue up to climb down the wire upside down and tretch their necks to pick at food in the middle, highly entertaining antics

Yes in my previous house, my upstairs study looked out onto trees where I hung several bird-feeders.
The various variety of birds all had their own behaviour.
Bluetits would fight each other for a place whereas long-tailed tits arrived in a troop and spread themselves amicably.
Newly-fledged jackdaws would land but the feeder would swing and they would fly off - later on they would arrive in pairs and balance either side of the feeder - a behaviour that was learned each season.
One day, a woodpecker arrived then flew off, shortly returning with their mate - there must have been communication between them.
