RIP Terry Jones

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Wed Jan 22, 2020 2:23 pm

Terry Jones, founder member of Monty Python and director of three of Python’s celebrated feature films, has died aged 77, his family have announced. In a statement they said: “Terry passed away on the evening of 21 January 2020 at the age of 77 with his wife Anna Soderstrom by his side after a long, extremely brave but always good humoured battle with a rare form of dementia, FTD.

Sad to lose yet another personality whose skill and work has provided entertainment to so many.
Farewell.

Two down, four to go (supposedly a comment from John Cleese).

It was by John Cleese, but he did add some other thoughts as well:

TOM UTLEY: As a student, Monty Python made me howl with laughter. So why do I find it grindingly unfunny these days?

Try persuading somebody under 60 the Goon Show is funny.

From someone slightly over 80, the Goons were hilarious.

As for Monty Python, we didn't have a TV when it started, and when we got one I wondered what all the fuss was about.

I'm still wondering.

It became a sort of 'cult' and then in ZA it was banned so that of course massively increased its popularity and circulation. I can remember our 'crowd' used to go round a friend's house in Clifton and after consuming some green stuff that the SAP would not have approved, we would spend hours in hysterics, rewinding, mimicking, and enjoying MP. Why, I'm not sure any more.

A few years ago I was walking along the sea front in a small town in Portugal and telling a friend about MP, and I did the : "He is not the **** Messiah ... he's ...." and somebody walking towards us shouted out ... "a very naughty boy ..."
Now THAT was funny!

Some Python humour has not aged well, but other parts of it are still with us even if people aren't aware of its origin. The dead parrot is an obvious example, and the unexpected Spanish Inquisition and even spam, as found in email, originated from Python, thanks to the Vikings.

'Waffer-thin' mint, anyone?
