The Sherlock Holmes character Dr Watson is reputed to have been modelled on Dr Brydon who was claimed to be the sole survivor of 4500 or so British troops and their hanger-ons (total about 16,500) who died at Gandamak Pass.
Of course the papers of the time ignored the other survivors who numbered few but did include some Indian troops.
