This may not be something that can be guessed as it was a fantasy type, a figment of W E Johns' imagination.
As I said there is a tenuous connection with Grumman as one of their aircraft had an alternative name the same a Biggles' plane.

Good guesses but this was a fantasy type which Johns called the Tarpon and it was an amphibian. A number of Grumman Avengers were delivered to the Fleet Air Arm and were named the Grumman Tarpon. The Avenger was somewhat different to the Tarpon aircraft described by W.E.Johns which was apparently total fantasy.
