Re: Trivia Question of the Day
He does have something in common with the Duke of Wellington in that he too defeated Napoleon in battle but not Waterloo. He was one of the 'spectators' at the Battle of Waterloo and, in its aftermath and with the Duke of Wellington's permission, took the French surrender at Amiens and Arras.

Re: Trivia Question of the Day
It doesn't look like this trivia question will be answered but one last clue.
He defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Acre in 1799. As a reward Parliament voted him a pension of 1000 guineas.

Re: Trivia Question of the Day
Afraid not although, at the time, his fame rivalled that of Nelson.
It rather looks as though this challenge will not be solved and I don't want the thread to die.
I was thinking of Admiral Sir Sidney Smith GCB, GCTE, KmstkSO, FRS. During his career he served as a spy, diplomat as well as a naval officer. A book of his exploits would read like a work of fiction.
There is a decent potted biography of him on morethannelson.com and I can recommend the book 'Overlooked Hero. A Portrait of Sir Sidney Smith' available on Amazon.
Open House.

Re: Trivia Question of the Day
Have been having a possible retinal tear investgated at the local hospital. The repair is not a pleasant prospect - laser spot welding then one month face down all the time!! Buggah!
So with blurry eyes I'll pass the baton to whoever can pick it up.

Rossian, for what it's worth, SWMBO had this a few years ago. I can't remember how long it was she had to stay face down, but pretty sure it wasn't as long as a month. The surgeon put her on to a bloke who rents out stands that you can rest your face on while sitting. She was told that she would get cataracts within a year, but after about 5, she's just started to get one. She puts it down to doing exactly what she was told re staying face down. Dunno how true this is.
The repair op isn't unpleasant. It may be without the sedation, but although she was awake she didn't care. From memory, she had a brief general anaesthetic so she could be given the local behind her eye.

Re: Trivia Question of the Day
What's the angular resolution of the human eye? (Seeing as we're on optics, it seems.)
Also, "why 4KTV isn't really better than HDTV".

Re: Trivia Question of the Day
Seems to be about 60 degs.
Second question, no idea haven't had a TV since 1999.
'Yes, Madam, I am drunk, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly.' Sir Winston Churchill.
Re: Trivia Question of the Day
Angular resolution is about the smallest thing that can be resolved. It's about 1 arcminute, which means the human eye (presumably not a shortsighted one) can distinguish things 30cm apart at 1km.
The 4KTV thing is because at typical TV viewing distance, HDTV is about at the resolution limit, so most people won't be able to perceive the difference with 4K.
Someone else have a go.

Re: Trivia Question of the Day
Isn't the perceived benefit more, smaller pixels and therefore a 'sharper' picture?
But it all comes down to the capability of the human eye to differentiate any actual difference.
There is also the little matter of no screen can display what isn't in the source material, be it a transmitted signal or recorded medium.

As this thread seems to have stalled, here's another question.

Doesn't France take this honour with such diverse Overseas Departments as French Polynesia and St.Pierre & Miquelon?

Re: Trivia Question of the Day
Dunno.
I am aware that l'île de La Réunion was the 1st place in the world to use the Euro, So I assume that it is the furthest east, that means French Polynesia must be 'tother side of the International Date Line and furthest west.
