James Joyce's squeeze if I remember, Bloomsday? from Ulysses. Almost readable(with difficulty) before the final decent into the total incomprehensibility of "Finnegan's Wake". The modern novel, term three of Ordinary English Aberdeen University 1959. I didn't finish either and nor do I have any wish to.
