Re: Trivia Question of the Day

My first thought was a small country and Vatican City, San Marino and Liechtenstein came to mind. On second thoughts, I guessed that one pick pocket crime in the Vatican ( pop 500 approx) would put it as one of the highest crime places per capita in the World. Much the same for San Marino. Liechtenstein must have a similar rate to that of surrounding nations even if financial crimes go unreported there.

Thoughts then turned to some of the smaller island states in the Pacific. Fiji. Palau etc.

Then one pondered on what is reported as a crime. Speeding?Probably not in some countries. Also, some smaller countries probably do not report crime rates.

From my experience, it would likely be one of the Scandahooligan nations or, based on per capita, Canada where I have always sensed people to be pretty law abiding as they are in New Zealand. But, as I said, it all depends on the reporting.

Talmacapt has it with Iceland.

Qatar has the lowest crime rate in the world, followed by the UAE, according to Numbeo statistics.

Differing statistics. Not a good question but some interesting results.

Your go, well done.

The only reason I know is that it was the answer to a Sunday Times Jumbo crossword best part of 50 years ago.

May have been an anagram .

One of those things that stayed in my mind from my Modern Encyclopedia for Children which reads:
Jenkins' Ear, War of:
In 1731, a British ship coming home from the West Indies was boarded by a Spanish man-of-war. The ship's cargo was stolen and the captain, Robert Jenkins, had his ear cut off. On arriving in England Jenkins complained to the British Parliament, and war was declared against Spain.

Bearing in mind that lawn tennis was originally called 'sphairistike', might I suggest tennis?

Correct; better known to me as Jai alai after seeing a documentary about it years ago.

Well done, Rossian.

Guessed right. :-bd
Xistera sounds like cesta, Spanish for basket.
I actually went to a Jai Alai match years ago at a fronton in Florida.
Very fast game with good athletes. :YMAPPLAUSE:
Lots of betting going on much like horse racing.

OK O/H and no action.

How many chukkas in a high goal polo match.

Know nothing about polo.

I haven't a clue, and will not look it up, but how about 8.

Maybe it is an odd number - I don't know whether they change ends.

Is there something significant about it being "high goal" as opposed to any other type of polo match?

I know you were on the "Queens Flight", did you play or were the "staff" expected to walk round stamping on the divots?

No talmacapt but close. High goal I think is a longer match.

The whole crowd is expected to stamp divots. I got to go to matches on a tour when our principal pax was playing. I certainly couldn't play very skilled I would fall off the gee gee before the 2nd chukker.

Great game to watch, very fast.

Waiting for wife to come out of dentist and have now looked it up.

You, perhaps, ought to add "modern" or something similar, to your question.

The number has changed.

Quite interesting game it would seem.

Thanks talmacapt. OK in the present rules.

Those ponies are really ridden hard. Each player has a few and they change them regularly.

Re horses.

Can't get my petrol chipping machine going and have given up for a while.

It worked before lunch.

I think I have ridden a horse 3 times, once I cannot remember the where, when or why.

The other times were on a Cairo trip, from the hotel to the pyramids c1972, and in Whistler on a Vancouver trip c1991.

Haven't fallen off but do not intend to ride one again.

It is alright until the horse realises it is going home!!
