Not so idiotic Shirley. Rather be in a nice airie fluttering around in the sky than a water filled trench with rats and disease on the Somme. Either way you are going to get deadded, prefer to go in style.

Until you come down to earth. Hopefully not in a trench. I think it has been posted before but you are getting it again.

Didn't "Mick" Mannock use to fly around with a revolver with which to shoot himself before he was immolated by his burning aircraft, parachutes being for sissies and conchies in those days!

Men are not born to be glorious idiots. I, for example, have put in years of practice and training to become the idiot I usually am.

It often struck me when looking around yer average crew room that, despite the rigorous selection and subsequent training, the military still seemed to have its full complement of personality types ranging from extreme extrovert to extreme introvert.
I think there's a view in civilian life that we come off a cookie-cutter style production lines with all extremes of personality ground off. And yes, no shortage of eejits!

Why was there a preponderance of good bridge players in the Radio trades?
Engines and Instruments tended to be next best, but the Armourers were usually dire.

Armourers were more involved with the process of knocking down bridges, Shirley?

The most "Glorious idiots" using it in its most British and noble meaning would have been the men on the ground remaining after the departing V-bombers. This particularly applies to the QRA dispersal crew. The amount of pure guts required to stand next to an aircraft on a scramble doing your duty and knowing the missiles would be arriving within minutes is beyond my comprehension.

Boing, fatalism, 50% of aircrew would not have survived the scramble either.

I recall our CSRO in Cyprus trying to have a sensible lecture. With potential bailout areas as far east as Kazakhstan our thoughts on escape and evasion were frivolous at best.
