Personally I hate the Archers
I've never forgiven the Beeb for putting The Archers in the Dick Barton slot.
I must ask my English better half about this! :)

Personally, I suspect that I would agree with you.

She needs to be quite old to understand what I'm on about.

Indeed - same age, but 7 years-older brother was a devotee.

Then there was Journey into Space,

Journey into Space - was that the one on Radio Luxembourg at 7 on Sunday night? We were allowed to stay up for that one as a treat, but nowadays I get confused with Dane Dare in the Eagle!

C16 - it might amaze to day's youngsters that we could be entertained and on the edges of our seats by something with no over the top sound and visual effects, but just the use of our imaginations. Biff boff, take that you rotters!

Even with a few sound effects, the radio version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was way superior to any of the TV and film versions since. It's all done with a decent imagination.

Old-style comedians were like that too, they'd take you through a joke but never actually say or do anything rude or offensive, that was entirely up to your own brain to manage that part.

llondel - yes that was real talent and didn't rely on swearing to try and make them sound funny.

That was Mrs Dales' Diary.
My mother was an actress in the BBC Radio Drama Repertory Company for four decades. One of thousands of parts she played over the years was one of the family members of the Dales. I won't say which one as I don't wish to compromise my privacy and anonymity here.

She was on the radio at least three or four times a week, often five or even six times, mostly other than The Dales thing. In those days all BBC Radio dramas were broadcast live. As a kid at a boarding Prep school, from the age of seven to thirteen, I used to surreptitiously listen to the radio with an earpiece on the end of a wire threaded through my sleeve from a transistor radio hidden in my desk. I was listening to the voice of my mother, live, while in class and pretending to pay attention to the Latin master or the Geography master who'd never been outside Surrey in his life. None of the other kids could do that from one week or month to the next. I felt, in some way, superior to them.

My crystal radio required a metal bedframe to pick up a signal strong enough. That would have been difficult to take into classes. But then again Radio Luxenborg was preferred listening - at night.

I knew who Dick Barton was but the show definitely predates my better half. 😊

BBC Radio 4 Extra often airs some of the classic radio shows from the 50's which, as a child of the 60's in SA, I really like. TV had not been introduced in South Africa in the 1960's and the SABC English Radio Service used to repeat a lot of the earlier BBC Radio material, a lot of that from the 1950's.

I listened to this again recently. Twas, and still is, superb.

As for Dan Dare, I do often wonder if Elon Musk was just a little too fond of the The Eagle...

Radio was best when they had valves and Bakelite knobs and the green "tuning eye". Now we have digital radio and knobs on the air.

Who was it, someone must remember ? Cheerful Charlie ? who was banned from the BBC for these two ...

"When apples are red they're ready for plucking, when girls reach sixteen they're ready for ....... " ( silence)

and "I was walking across a tightrope the other day when I met a girl coming the other way, I didn't know whether to block her passage or toss myself off."

The Dick Barton theme was also used in a chase scene in the stage version of 39 Steps. I saw that a few years ago - do go and see it if you have the chance. 4 actors playing more than 100 roles - it was hilarious! Just don't expect it to be anything other than a farce.

MrsP still very nervous about the virus, but we've had messages to say some Garda restaurants are already open, and "our" hotel is getting ready to open. All we need is for Jet2 to reopen EDI-VRN and we might still get a holiday. Already cancelled a Costa Rica trip this year. :(
