Oops. Repeater shell there. Sorry.
Hope fully not long lasting.

Although you cannot usually delete duplicate p*sts, if you can edit that p*st, (time limited) you can delete the text and replace it with alternative words Shirley?

Nooo. This one struck something. It is just ball. I also have an Aden 30mm and an A10 30mm. The latter is interesting, much heavier than the Aden, nylon spin bands rather than copper and around the middle it measures 35mm.
It must have come to a sudden stop having hit the immovable object right on.

Re: We need more
You can, within the allowable time-frame. It just requires the very simple and logical step which eludes some of the supposedly 'capable' folk here ('B') of looking at what you have just posted (or better still, ('A') - previewing what you are about to post) and not just wandering off into a daydream.Although you cannot usually delete duplicate posts
'A' - BEFORE YOU POST - Select 'Full Editor and Preview': Correct blindingly obvious typos and re-post
'B' - Within 60 minutes, select the little 'pen' icon in the block top right of your post. At the bottom is the option to delete - simples.
NB There is a time limit on both functions: It is set on this board at 60 minutes.

Re: We need more
Talking about cannon/guns like the Aden, I remember hearing, perhaps erroneously, that the mighty Lightning was not fitted with the same or similar, but was meant to down those pesky Ruskies with what looked all the world, to an iconoclast like me, like Brox Guy Fawkes rockets. Now the Lightning is/was quite clearly an awesome machine but its proposed use of such pusillanimous armament might explain the smiling Coca/Pepsi Cola salutes of those Russian crews that I often see in photo's of those interceptions in the rarified air above the cold North Sea!Pontius Navigator wrote: ↑Sat May 15, 2021 6:54 amNooo. No doubt an outraged member of the Blitzen fraternity will be along to tutor me in the error of my thinking here!

Re: We need more
BOAC will no doubt correct you on that misconception.
I think if you hit a Bear with a Red Top it would have known about it even if it didn't go bang. OTOH an AIM 9 might have been an inconvenience. Again BOAC should be able to put us right.

Enraged reporting for duty, sah!
Correct for the Mk 3 and 5, following some political idiot's decision. I think 4 Aden were fitted in the Mk 1 in the nose, 2 in the Mk 2 (might be 4, never flew it) but in the Mk6 and 53 a twin Aden (fuel cooled!! - why not.....? ) gun pack was fitted in the front of the Ventral tank.
Always loaded and available on a QRA intercept (Mk 6) of any saluting Russian crews.

Re: We need more
I don't believe DU was used in this country.
The A10 round is 366 gm and hollow. The pointed end is missing.
The 27mm round is 257 gm and the nose is about 36mm long. There is no obvious impact damage except that note has a series of ripples from the main body forward. It had a white metal alloy spin band.
The 30mm Aden is 219 gm with no impact damage and a copper spin band. Given its lighter weight and greater diameter it is obviously hollow.
The A10 round has a flat base, the 27mm is also flat but inset from the bottom. The Aden round has a convex base.
The heaviest by far, and a solid penetrator, was a dark grey metal round, about 30mm in diameter and possibly twice the weight of the A10 round. I think it was from a CRV7. I didn't keep that one.

Operation Mincemeat - whose meat?
We all know the story of "The Man Who Never Was". Both the book and the movie.
When I read the book and saw the movie, I was totally unconvinced that they would have used the body of a dissolute alcoholic vagrant, who had died of either pneumonia or rat poison, to simulate a Royal Marines Major having drowned. Just too great a risk of discovery - and a very adverse outcome to the intended mission to deceive Jerry about the invasion plan for Sicily. Not good risk management.
I do not believe the official story that the body was that of such a vagrant, a man called Glydwr Michael.
This slightly different version of the tale is much more credible.
I think that Montagu, faced with a choice of the bodies of hundreds of fit young men, would have chosen the one whose surname was Martin.
It's slightly ironic that his grave in Huelva has his surname upon it.
As for which of the many unidentified bodies of the ship sinking lies in the grave in Ardrossan: we will never know. Similarly, we'll never know how the rotted remains of the tramp were disposed of when they were found to be totally unsuitable for 'purpose'. Cremation, most likely.

Re: We need more
^ thanks for that one, UP - some great actors.
I enjoy watching folk who seem to know what they're doing. Bit surprised they don't wear gloves, though.
