The Early 20th Century Seen in Real Color [15:17]
Color photography began to be widely popularized during the 1960s and 70s, and we're used to seeing history before that point in black and white. But color has been reproduced for much longer than that. Early experiments were made shortly after the invention of photography itself in the early 1800s, and one of the most successful and beautiful methods, the autochrome, was launched on the market in 1907. In this video I tell the stories of people and places that appear on some of these autochromes.

"Oh dear!"
That's a good ad, not seen by me before, made better by Joss Ackland's mellifluous voice!

We need more men like Captain (later Lieutenant-Colonel) Frederick John Roberts, MC, and the sub-editor who was Lieutenant (later Lieutenant-Colonel) John Hesketh ("Jack") Pearson, DSO, MC., the two men who were primarily responsible for the Wipers Times.TheGreenAnger wrote: ↑Wed Nov 16, 2022 5:00 pmA superb film.

Pepsi, or rather, more documentaries like this one...
Incredible story, much more interesting than one might have thought..., even if we do know it, or rather, think we know it!

Highly recommended.

Re: We need more
Films like Le Mans 66.
I finally got to watch the film again last night and really enjoyed it, far more than the first viewing. Despite the liberties taken with the true story, it was sufficiently close to the historical record not to make it altogether unbelievable.
The Ken Miles story is a fascinating one.

If you haven't seen the film don't watch this video.
Nor read this...

Re: We need more
Which phase do you think you are in Plum? I sincerely hope that this is not your swansong in this site. You are clearly an intelligent human being who has had an interesting and varied life work with a wealth of experience to draw on from which we would all be the beneficiaries. Please don't flounce away in a fit (or maybe more than one fit) of pique. I'm not the only one, I suspect, who would miss your presence.
I remember once after a very frustrating flight sending a "serious" snottograme to the ship we'd been working with. Next morning I get summoned to W/C Ops office who said, more or less "WTF over" had I really sent it? I was informed that a Seaking was coming ashore to take me out interview the Admiral. I did and he gave me good lesson in that, if you feel that strongly about it, don't press transmit until next morning after you've re-read the message and imagined the recipients likely reaction. It was a very instructive day and he was very gentlemanly about my callowness and we parted on good terms.
