We need more

#1 Post by G-CPTN » Mon Mar 16, 2020 10:53 am

Folks,

for those who are being required to spend time in self-isolation, this site provides more than a source of information and entertainment - it is a saviour from boredom, however we need more contributions (and more responses) otherwise there is nothing to which to look forward to during the hours and days of being starved of stimulation by human contact.

We do need more - may I just ask that the content of any link is made clear from title or description so as not to cause consternation and monkeyhouse if something is not quite to one's taste? ;;)

Our ages are none of anybody's business

Oops... I was going to post this and, hesitated, then did!

If it helps, Wendy, who killed herself sadly, would have been in her late 60's now...

Actually she would have been closer to her 80's ***** she lied to me... Ain't my damned business!

Age, what's that.

I must admit to doing something I never thought I would. I go to a gym with a trainer. How snowflakey can you get? But I did give him the briefing.

At our first meeting he asked me his routine question of what I would like to achieve. I told him that my mostly likely need for strength and agility is if came upon a motor accident. I told him I needed to be able to run 100 yards to the accident, bend open a door if it was jammed, undo somebodies seat belt, pull them out of the vehicle and then pull them 25 yards clear of the vehicle then possibly do the whole routine again for the passenger. For some reason he seemed surprised but he did enter into the spirit of the project.

We haven't quite made it yet but when we do forward rolls to the standing position are next.

Ah, South Cerney, interminable basket ball or floor exercises. Fortunately one of the PT staff, possibly National Service, was not of the kick strapping fraternity and was easily subverted into parachute training. Lots of standing around waiting for one's turn, forward left, forward right, backwards left etc.

Fortunately in almost 40 years I never had to put it into to practise. Once I retired my training kicked in and I have avoided many a broken wrist or arm at the expense of a sore knee and dirt on my back.

I think my most spectacular fall was a dusty street in India. Forward left, roll, back on my feet and carried on. I still remember Indians startled and just starting to come to the whiteman's aid as I strode off.

A repository to good old films would be welcome. I've giggled for several mentioned around here - but, probably being of slightly shorter working memory (a decade possibly), links would be very welcome!
Or, the 'seconds from disaster'-type docs.

I proffer this one.

Dickie Attenborough's truly brilliant performance as an RSM is all the more remarkable when you know that he didn't actually do National Service.

A couple of boxed DVD sets of some TV shows from the 60's might help.

I have the following;
'The Samurai' (Koichi Ose as Shintaro)

All five seasons of 'The Saint', starring Roger Moore

The cartoon series, 'Rocky and Bullwinkle.'

Plus the DVD sets of 'The World at War'
' Crusade in the Pacific'

Still got a few books to read though....

Channel 81 on Freeview shows old B/W films all day long if you like that sort of thing.

I’ve visited the SS Great Britain in Bristol a couple of times, well worth spending a few hours there and if you get bored with that, Aardman animations ( Wallace and Gromit) are nearby :-bd
When all else fails, read the instructions.

I was once part of a team doing an amateur radio special event station from the SS Great Britain, that was fun. We also did one at Temple Meads Station for the GWR 150 years celebration. The antenna for that was strung down the lamp posts from the clock tower and remained there for a couple of years afterwards.
