Now known as the ChrisHaniBaragwanath Hospital...

The airfield and club was extant when I lived in Johannesburg, but the airfield per se is 'non est' today I believe.

Re: We need more
Very recently sumbdy on another thread in another subset of this forum, brought up the matter of an almost incomparable, almost unique, pilot.
Now, here's one who fits the description.

RAF Form 414 Volume 13
With many other tales too.About this episode - Another installment of tales from my RAF logbook. I’m about halfway through my 4 year sentence at RAF Valley instructing those RAF pilots destined for the fast jet world. The first couple of years had been far from without incident and I should probably mention that I nearly lost my greatest friend to an accident but someone was watching over him that day and he survived.

Re: We need more
Fascinating video - many thanks.
In 1979 I participated in a convoy of test commercial vehicles from top to bottom of Italy (and return).
The trucks were loaded with cast concrete blocks which had a smooth white surface finish.
The Customs officers were suspicious as to why we were importing marble into Italy . . .

Sorry TGG, but feel Vulcans with nipples look very effete. My Vulcans had a big black NBS radome up front, looking like JAWS about to take a chunk out of anyone who gets in the way.

XH534 at Finningly. With NBS radome and extended tail for ECM - jaws at front and sting in tail!! Little blister above roundel housed five crew. Possibly my signature in archived F700.

Indeed a lovely looking A/C.
And you once fell off the wing of one Alison? Bloody lucky you didn't do yourself some serious harm!

You only live twice. Once when you're born. Once when you've looked death in the face.
Re: We need more
When I was playing with them they were the absolute cutting-edge of avionics technology. Straight from school to three years of college - RAF Locking, thence to RAF Finningly. Imagine 19 yr old wandering out to a Vulcan on the line, hooking up Houchin (115 volt 400Hz) and battery cart (28v). Unlocking the hatch, dropping the ladder and climbing in. And getting to play with all the yummy stuff. HF call to Goose Bay for radio check. Check VHF and UHF with tower. Jamming all the TV signals for 50 mile radius running ECM (Electronic Counter Measures). Yeh they were good times. Even de-icing, spraying hot glycol mix in the middle of Winter, whilst trying not to slide off the wing to a decent drop. Happy daze.Pinky the pilot wrote: ↑Mon Mar 28, 2022 3:58 amIndeed a lovely looking A/C.
