Re: We need more
Ah, the days of trying to race the fog before it engulfed the destination oil platform! I too have fallen backwards off a bar stool at the Sumburgh Hotel but survived! That was an awful place to stay in the 70s before the room extensions were built.Undried Plum wrote: ↑Sun Oct 16, 2022 4:30 pmYup. That's the place.
A good friend of mine died, falling off a bar stool In the bar of the Sumburgh Hotel. I was almost there for him, but I was having a piss at the time.
True story.

Re: We need more
Circa 1975, I remember being fogged in that place. 19 of us, including two crew of the 61, were 'put up' in that wretched place. Sleeping bags on the floor of one room. The dining room, I think. For some reason I remember that the oil company (Burmah?) paid £17 for each of us to doss that night. It was an absolute money mill in those days.CharlieOneSix wrote: ↑Sun Oct 16, 2022 6:22 pmAh, the days of trying to race the fog before it engulfed the destination oil platform! Kai Tak - Happy Memories !! Never landed at the new place. Having experience of aircraft approaching high and landing further in and then running off the far end, I used set up the final, final, approach in a 747 with reference to the short body VASI's not the required long body VASI, which was a greater distance in from the displaced threshold, executed correctly this ensured a touchdown almost exactly on the displaced threshold painted line - I never undershot, but it caused a few comments from ATC, not always congratulatory !
As P3/Nav I once observed a Captain deciding to abandon the landing for some reason, maybe crosswind ? but ... having set up the approach from Cheung Chow, the appropriate missed approach before being lined up was based on another NDB further on the track before turning towards the Chequer Board, and having made the decision to abandon he turned before reaching that, and the consequent proximity to, and avoidance of, high rise buildings on the Island was interesting !
Walking across the apron to our parked aircraft one day we noticed a USAF Hercules flying parallel to the runway, but over the Island, presumably having decided to abandon the approach as mentioned above ? Suddenly it turned towards us and started to descend. People started running back to the terminal, but it executed a 90 deg. right turn at very low level then landed about 1/3 of the way down the runway - and stopped ! Unbelievable.

We have the same problem here in South Australia with extinction rebellion/rent-a-crowd protesters gluing themselves to the pavement. I really wish that the Police would just leave them there!

As a remote afficionado of the Jetbanger's spawn, never having flown the newfangled 505 thingy; and as a Noggie-sprawk speaker of the language that the Rogalander folk speak in their own accent which is only slightly different from my own, I loved this one:
PS irrelevantly: Hearing Clearwater Revival takes me right back to the early 1970s. On the eight-track, in a Ford Taunus on the E18 or the E6. You had to be there, man.

Brilliant clip thank you LG. Those were the days, a wonderful approach. Elf and safety probably wouldn't allow it today.limeygal wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 11:14 amFor you Speedy-turn on sound! Re: We need more
Great, thank you.
In similar vein .... a few years ago I was in New York and went to the top of the present World Trade Centre building, to replace the ones destroyed in the 9/11 attack. I found myself looking over the Canarsie Approach to runway 13R at JFK. A similar circular approach, demanding in its own way, tho' not the same as Kai Tak of course. Never thought I'd see that again !

A lot of the Rhodies found their peace later in religion. Whatever it takes/or took, I guess.
All that said, a true story and an amazing recovery for this chap.
