Played one of the giggling maids in the cast, at a time when my voice wasn't quite as deep and booming and manly as it is now! =)) The wretched price of going to a boy's school with a music teacher with a penchant for Gilbert and Sullivan. I never lived down the big pink bow my mother made to go with my kimono! :))

What an absoluletly fascinating piece of history. Certainly these strikes were symptomatic of the last death rattle of the kind of colonialism that underpinned the Empire. People were tired of war and no greater evidence for that fact was that Churchill had been booted out. It seems that the upper echelons of the RAF were naive, and misunderstood the motivation and aspirations of the men under them, and In some instances managed the situation very poorly indeed!

Heaven forfend that anybody should really think, or have any expectation of real justice in the military!

Thanks for posting. Well worth watching.

I vaguely remember a lecture at Cranditz on the subject of Mutiny.

I've forgotten most, or all, of it but I vaguely remember that the gist of it was to recognise the early signs and to stamp down hard without inflaming things. I think the next stage was to find out the causes underlying the putative mutiny and to ameliorate them while reporting the situation to above. I don't remember being taught anything beyond that. We had white stuff on our hats and ickle white things on the turndowns of our tunics, so I don't suppose that we had any 'need to know' what to do beyond that.

Looking at that video, I doubt that anyone else in the Air Force knew much more to do about it than we cadets did about the hypotheticals of our lecture. I suspect that the whiff of scrambled eggs about the uniforms of the grownups in 1946 totally obliterated all their other senses. That happens, y'know. Or used to.

Well remember whenever an obnoxious zobit would demand we do such and such, almost on cue we would all mutter "Come the Revolution". We were all much taken with the design of guillotines, discussing what improvements could be best implemented to increase the entertainment factor.

Towards the end of the misguided South African military enterprise in South West Africa, Angola and surrounding countries too, (including Botswana), a group of baby faced conscripts and "ou manne" (i.e. older conscripts who had seen the the dark side already and were being called up again for the umpteenth time in an increasingly bloody war, for both sides), were packed off on one of those those interminably long train trips from De Aar, allied with a small cadre of "bos befok" (bush ****) permanent force lunatics, with the 1000 yard stares, to go up north and do the same ***** all over again, and like the joke about IQ says, achieve the same result, i.e. failure in the bigger sense, no matter how many battles were won.

Anyway relations with the powers that be, boiled over on that train, and the officer's section of the train was decoupled and left stranded, with the officers, in the desert! =))

It was all hushed up, of course, but the signs of strain were there there to be seen, throughout the system, and, less than a year later, SWAPO was legalised, and on its way to government, and the dominoes started falling, and things in Southern Africa would never be the same again.

Thanks for that video - it took me back to Queen's viewing terrace in August 1958 - just a couple of years before that film - before the 'new' BEA livery with black (that I call the Vanguard livery).
I took lots of photographs - mainly Viscounts but also an AF Caravelle.
One detail that surprised me was the number of 'old' (pre-War) vehicles in Central London - though it was just 15 years after the end of the War and there had been controls on domestic vehicle availability.

I shall watch it again.

You've got to be a stone-hearted non-Scottish person type of Sassen (or worse) not to get a wee bit o' smoke in yer eye at the skirl o' the pipes and drums.

Almost as good as us. Bunch of Appies at Earls Court for Royal Tattoo in 1963 (might have been '62). C'pt we had buggles as well. Alison was a buggler.
