Come on, own up! Were you any of the denizens here members of Baden Powell influenced outfits in their youthful days?

Yes, I was a 'cub' but got expelled for eating a brownie. In later life in ZA I led a couple of scout expeditions into the Hottentots Hollands Mountains.

I was Owls Patrol Leader at 2nd Martin de Porres Craighall Park at the age of 13 before my father decided to drag my family down to Cape Town (at the time I thought he was a cruel man).

The days of Red Rover, British Bulldog, Stingers and even Murder Ball until Martin Sampson had his nose broken. Clove hitches, badges, weekend camps, night hikes, one at Majuba then later in the Cedarberg, Winterhoek and Witzenberg moutains for over a week at a time in those cases. Competitions like the Rayner Trophy... all good stuff and so much more too.

I was thrown out of the Cubs for being undisciplined.

Yes, Cub Sixer Scout Patrol Leader, Asst; Scoutmaster. Can still tie a Turk's Head ( is that racist ? ) to make a Woggle, and a Bowline - The Rabbit comes out of the Hole, around the Tree, and back down the Hole.

( and living in NZ I want no jokes about Sheepshanks ! )

I joined them between late 70's to mid 80's. My parents insisted going there in the last years. A neutral experience although I am happy I went in the first part.

On a bight I hope! ;)))

Scouting also made me aware of the stars, what with an Englishman, ex RAF navigator and then Luxair Flight Engineer, whose son was part our troop. He taught us to hike many miles across country by use of the stars alone and left me with with an abiding interest in astronomy. Good chap who was made redundant not long after he had imparted part of his considerable stellar knowledge and returned to England. Met up with his son a couple of years ago and asked after his Dad who had decamped to live and work as art dealer in Italy. Twas good to hear he was still alive. One of those people who, unbeknownst to them, leave a good indelible print on others.

Drummed out of the scouts from patrol leaders slot as I'd got diverted on scout nights to the Guide group in a nearby village for further studies with a girl from the class above me in school. As the scout master was my Latin teacher he had me pretty well sussed and guessed why I hadn't been at the scout meeting.
"Clever but lazy" was his summing up when I left school, also noticed during my flying training and hit fairly hard which put me on the right (-Ish) path.

I went to one cub scout meeting as a try-out, seemed to be a lot of pointless crap to me and I never went back.

I was a Brownie (a Gnome, to be exact) and later in life a Brown Owl and a Guide leader.

Not allowed to join as I was in the church choir so couldn't do church parade.

Cubs, scouts and fings. [-X

This was the real thing. Got to fly in a chippy. Magic. And we had guns. Although our 303's had been spiked, the long WWI pig stickers that we had would have had elf and sefty quaking in their boots.
