Preternatural instincts, beauty and other sundry, but fun, balderdash..

#1 Post by TheGreenGoblin » Wed Jul 01, 2020 8:26 pm

I was watching M*A*S*H tonight and was wondering about Radar O'Reilly's famed, but fictional, ability, to hear helicopters before anybody else could. I have heard some pilots say that engines talk to those who will hear, long before the cracked piston head disintegrates or the whining turbine lets go. I have spoken to pilots up north who claimed they could navigate between the islands by looking at the wave motion in the context of the wind direction. I have heard of 707 pilots who flew by night with sun glasses on, lest the moon compromise their night vision. The Polynesians claimed they could navigate the Pacific islands by dangling their balls in the water.... the list goes on and on.

My dog appeared to hear our car coming before it reached our house. Animals are often involved in these tales of preternatural abilities...

I, channeling my inner Ronald Searle, am often amazed at "such strange, unnatural beauty" when mesmerized by my face, like Father Jack's mud angel, in the mirror in the morning!

Wadda you all think? Nonsense, hokum, or is there something to at least some of this stuff?

Several years ago I woke around 2:45am, wondered why, checked GeoNet, no earthquake.
Thought, "I know there is going to be an earthquake, I'll lie awake and wait for it."
Ten or fifteen minutes later - earthquake.
And with the morn, those angel faces smile...

I am apt to believe that your experience wasn't not a case of coincidence... and there is probably some, hitherto undiscovered, but physical, rational and empirically testable reason, for experiences such as yours...

I've had the same experience as Karearea several times, not 10 or 15 minutes, but may 2-5 minutes before the guria. I suspect there is a geophysical explanation.

Regarding hearing, I suspect that it's not so much sensitivity, but heightened ability to interpret an important sound. I used to ride a tandem with a blind rider, and often, we would both hear a distant car at the same time, because its approach was important to us. However, he was interested in motor cycles, and could tell the make and model by its sound, whereas that was unimportant to me, and I could just look if I wanted to know, so unless it had an unusual sound, to me it was just another motor bike.

I suspect there is a geophysical explanation.
I think this is correct.
There is anecdotal evidence of more people than one might expect being awake, even up and about, just prior to the Mag. 7.1 earthquake of 4:35am, September 4 2010.

Another thing I have noticed: I have heard the "rustling silk" sounds that accompany an aurora.
And with the morn, those angel faces smile...

I have ceased to say I like a property after a Viewing as it immediately gets struck down by SWMBO. Actually same thing if I express a negative view. Then I refuse to go on Viewings and am told I am not 'being helpful'. Seems to be an immutable law. The Husband can do Nothing Right.

My Mother woke my Father up at 0005 one morning and said " Carole has just had a baby girl", naturally Father thought she was nuts. She was spot on the exact time our first daughter was born.
When i was an apprentice at sea i slipped in the dew on the deck and knocked myself out.I came round with some crew stood around me asking if i was ok. Apparently i jumped up, pushed them all away and ran up to the radio shack. We were just arriving at Suez and the Sparks had just shut down, I insisted that i had to send my GrandMother some flowers. I was so wound up about it that he reluctantly opened up and sent a message to Interflora for me. The timing on the Interflora message was the exact time of my GrandMothers death.. I remembered sending the flowers but had no recollection of the drama i made of it..

My Mother woke up 'distressed' with a story about a landslide that covered a school - which turned out to be Aberfan.
