Monterey or Santa Cruz
Life may not be the party you hoped for, but while you're here, you may as well dance.
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Fox has it. Cannery Row would be to the left of the photo, a few minutes walk from where this was shot. Over to the right was Ford Ord, basic training for much of the west US.

I cannot tell you how many times I've listened to 'Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands'
"With your sheet-metal memories of Cannery Row..."

My first thought was Monte Cassino but I don't think so.
Somewhere in Italy, Catholic?
If not, another European Catholic country.

Spot on!
I've stayed there - it's a Parador. Highly recommended.
OH declared.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
I haven't stayed in that Parador but had a couple of holidays travelling around Spain, staying in Paradors, in the early 90s.
The then wife was working for Eurodisney and we lived in Paris for two years, which made it easy.

This has sat for a few days again . Don't want to monopolize thread, but don't want it to die either.
This is another from my parents' slide collection and probably near end of last century. From others that were with it, I have an approximate idea of where it is.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Looks to me like Belgium (Brussels area) or Germany (Aachen?) - trying to remember from school trips.
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
I agree, it does. From surrounding slides taken same time, I believe it is farther north.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Buses are the wrong colour, I think, for Finland and likewise Sweden.
Maybe they were different colours in earlier days.
I go for Copenhagen, or at least Denmark.
Statue of Hans C Anderson, possibly.
Only famous Dane I can think of offhand.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Just had a look, maybe Sweden, they had red buses in 1950s.
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
I think that the white building with a square tower might be (now) the Radisson Blue Plaza hotel in Helsinki but looking on GE a lot of details on it and the surrounding buildings have changed in the intervening years. If it is Helsinki the statue is apparently that of Alexis Kiven a Finnish author in the mid 19th C.
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
The slide WAS with others from Helsinki. DB is up.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
I ought to have known that, I have walked past it many times and live about 35 km away.
It is beside the railway station.
Useless pieces of information.
The man's name is Alexis Kivi, Kiven is the genitive of Kivi.
Finnish is a bit like Latin, the case is decided by changing the end of a word (there can be up to 31 case forms for a noun).
Prepositions as in English do not, generally, exist.
