The Capetonian WOE Thread
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Delayed departure - had another look and found Ochre Court RI, built for the Goelet family in 1892. It seems to have been given to The Sisters of Mercy in 1947.
The Goelet's daughter, May, married Henry Innes-Ker, 8th Duke of Roxburghe, taking with her an $8 million dowry. Their son, Robert, was a businessman with an interest in American railroads, hotels and real estate. Robert gave Ochre Court to the Sisters of Mercy in 1947
Wikipedia gives her dowry as $20m! She did her duty and gave the Duke a son.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Inn ... _Roxburghe
I expect a large part of her dowry went to the upkeep of Floors Castle at Kelso, the Duke's seat.
OH if correct.

O/H OK try this. The cellar is haunted and it has links with the American army.

I know he had a house just off Kingston Hill during the war, and his D-Day HQ was in Bushy Park
I think it's his house - Telegraph Cottage, Warren Road, Kingston upon Thames (about a mile from Opsboi Towers)

You are in the right country but HE wasn't based there American troops were though. Built in the mid 1800s.

Allied Naval Headquarters, Southwick House? It was in the library of Southwick House that Eisenhower took the decision to postpone the invasion for 24 hours.

Sorry no C16. At this place he met with another General to make plans for the invasion so before the postponement.
A Church dating back to the mid 1200s is right along side.

The Grove, Pearson Road, Sonning? Eisenhower stayed here prior to the Normandy landings.......EDIT: but the nearest church is not "right along side".

You need to go north. A surprising location for the talks. They had lunch together. You still can there.CharlieOneSix wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 5:22 pmThe Grove, Pearson Road, Sonning? Eisenhower stayed here prior to the Normandy landings.......EDIT: but the nearest church is not "right along side".
Going to bed, on line again 04.00 GMT.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
I used to cycle to it from my home in Hale (Cheshire) the name of the place has a ring to it. There is a gate from the garden that leads straight into the grave yard of the church. On summer evenings when the garden gets full people spill out into the grave yard and sit on tombs there with their drinks. Sure the occupants don't mind.

The Bells pub, Peover near Knutsford I think. Eisenhower and Patten discussed D Day plans over lunch here.
