Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Kulusuk it is.
Penge just really suks
I note Kulusuk doesn't have a single betting shop, poundland, cheap takeaway, pawnbrokers, charity shop, estate agents, or halal butchers.
I note Penge has nothing but the above!
All yours Smeagol!

Thanks Fox3
The building below is internationally renowned and, according to some, one of the most beautiful buildings of its' type in the world.
Can't see it myself.

It is indeed Helsinki railway station. Don't think it is particularly stunning architecturally myself, but then my opinion of architects : Structural engineers with their brains kicked out.
talmacapt is on the rails.

Must say I agree with you Smeagol.
I am currently over a thousand kilometres to the north (of Helsinki railway station), close to the Norwegian and Russian borders.
It is probably simpler to declare open house as I haven't any photographs, except those on my phone, to post.
O/H declared.

I knew I'd seen a picture of it recently. It was on a show called, I think, 'Architecture the Railways Built'. From memory, its claim to fame is that the clock tower is one of the earliest examples of art deco architecture.

Another architectural gem of a train station
When all else fails, read the instructions.
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Reading, UK.
O/H, if correct.
Warm day today, -6, but will be -20 overnight.
Start south tomorrow, should reach home about Friday.
Normally take the train, with car, but Finnish railways are on indefinite strike.
Will be able to post then instead of O/H.

As it is OH and to avoid this thread sliding too far down page 1, I'll post something.
The 'something' is another piece of statuary. Where is it and who is it depicting.

I believe that's Sir Humphry Davy, inventor of the miner's safety lamp (in his right hand), commemorated in the Market Square in Penzance.

My dad's side of the family is Cornish, from around there. His great uncle was a tin miner.
..and I do know where that is, G-Man, but I'll opt out as I would have to declare OH again.

There was an influx of Cornish tin miners to South Australian mines around Burra, and from there to other mines around Australia. They were known as "cousin Jacks", and somewhere, I have a book about them.
