Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Yes Ian, we are in Taiwan or Formosa as it was previously called.
So it is a gateway somewhere in Taiwan, but a gateway to what?
clue:
The mainland Chinese (People's Republic) would dearly love to get their hands on the contents of the building that this gate leads to.

The National Palace Museum, located in Taipei, Taiwan, has a permanent collection of nearly 700,000 pieces of ancient Chinese imperial artifacts and artworks, making it one of the largest of its type in the world. The collection encompasses 8,000 years of history of Chinese art from the Neolithic age to the modern. Most of the collection are high quality pieces collected by China's emperors. The National Palace Museum shares its roots with the Palace Museum in the Forbidden City, whose extensive collection of artwork and artifacts were built upon the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties

Absolutely correct. It is the gateway to the National Palace museum in Shilin District, northern Taipei. A very interesting museum to visit, the exhibits and artifacts are often quite stunning. I believe most of the items were brought from the mainland when Taiwan separated from the Peoples Republic which is why they would like them back.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Well, our latest challenge is a police station in an English speaking country but more investigation is required to establish where.

The interesting thing (to me) about this shot, is that there were some restaurants located along this pathway with tables and kitchen on opposite sides of the path. The nerveless waiters and waitresses had to thread their way through roller bladers, bicyclists and strollers in addition to throngs of pedestrians while carrying their loads of food and drink. Pretty place to dine, tho.

Very like Praia de Luz, Algarve ...but the distant background does not seem 'right'.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Also the pavement of Praria de Luz has a sort of chequered square pattern, I have found many views that it could be, ranging from Portugal to California, but I just can't place the type of street light.
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Huge hint- it is near the highest mountain in a European country. Another bigger hint in 8 hours if needed.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Slightly controversial , Mount Elbrus is the highest mountain on the European Continental plate, so must be the Black Sea waterfront in Sochi.
When all else fails, read the instructions.
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
My hint turned out to be ill worded apparently. It is near the highest mountain in Spain.
Also aviation connection.

Costa Adeje Tenerife? Just a guess. Highest mountain in Spain is on Tenerife and Tenerife South is there.

The gentleman from Botswana has got it.
When our flight landed at the location of the horrid crash, one woman remarke to her seatmate, "I don't know what I was expecting, but this isn't it".
El Tiede has oxygen available on the cable car to the summit.
On beach walkway, one could buy a Rolex for ten US bucks.
One did, simply to annoy a co-worker who constantly flaunted his.
