A slight change of tack here as many on this site are of more mature years they may be able to say where and even roughly when this was taken! One on the 'bucket list' of runs ashore at one time.

Congratulations! A sticky green or two and an adventure later with a young lady goes to ian16th!

One of a few legendary 'runs ashore' for the Navy and where kindly older ship mates fixed some younger innocent lads up with pretty young ladies. It only later being discovered they had something different in their underwear than expected. All gone now, as well was Wanchai, the area of Hong Kong for great runs ashore but no lady boys there, just highly priced sticky greens for the 'Suzie Wong' girls and other pursuits later for those inclined.

As for C16's Pubic Bay, sorry Subic Bay and Olongapo - we arrived there for a visit and expected an Asian version of the Wild West like Deadwood, only to find that martial law had been declared a few months before and it was a much tamer place than expected. Phenomenal memory C16 to remember the street name.

The photo is from 1962 - slightly before my time - but I remember that back then Algeciras, just over the border from Gib, was also prized as a disgusting run ashore until the Spanish made the border crossing difficult, which happened just before my first visit to Gib in 1966...

Signs of a misspent youth? Not really but it was good to enjoy the female company and the buzz for a short time but forewarned was forearmed. Oh - I forgot to mention Straight Street in Malta - otherwise known as 'The Gut' - another 'experience'!

In the days before mass air travel, these places were only usually visited by naval and merchant naval folk or locally visiting/stationed forces. Just as well they've gone really. Apologies for some thread drift around some of the world's dirty dives.

During the summer break at Dartmouth between terms, a soon to be Sea Vixen pilot and I went on HMS Belfast’s last trip to Gib and back before decommissioning. We went over the border to La Linea for what turned out to be a disgusting run ashore. I never knew ping pong balls could go so far without a bat being used.

Re "runs ashore":

La Linea (del Dolorosa): In my case it was the candle projectile trick. Impressive when it was lit.

Olangapo: Angeles City has taken over and is now an Asian sex tourism hub.

Bugis Street: Recall a young airmen coming back from there with a huge smile on his face. When told he had likely shagged a tranny he replied, 'Best shag of my life!'

Took the wife there a few years ago. Some excellent, low cost restaurants now.

Malta and Straight Street: Lived there two years as a late teen-ager. Rough. And if the 6th fleet was in port, a place to avoid. Shore patrol took no prisoners.
