The Capetonian WOE Thread
Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Raffles Hotel it is. The surrounds still have class: Beach Road (it really was edging the sea before reclamation) leads to the Padang, a tree-lined open area still used for cricket. Alas, with the astronomical land values, construction continues on high rise "carbuncles" that now dwarf the hotel and shop houses nearby.
Sorry, nothing sufficiently interesting prepared - Open House.

I thought I was answering Ex- A's challenge but it seems to have disappeared.
Stayed there once, for one night, on a Kuwait Airways detachment after one of the Gulf Wars.
BA had a DC10, and some Tristars, on lease as the Iraquis had nicked their aircraft.
Let someone else get it as I will make it OH.

Some kind person, by PM, pointed out that I had left the name of the hotel on it so this plonker took it down.talmacapt wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 1:08 pmI thought I was answering Ex- A's challenge but it seems to have disappeared.

Is it the bridge across the Guadalqivir (sp?) in Seville? Stayed in a modern hotel near there where the outer walls were falling away from the inner structure leaving gaps you couldput a fist into. OH if correct.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Sorry to go back a bit, but nice to see Raffles again. The crew hotel on my early trips to Sing. Given a ground floor room with an inside "Balcony" overlooking an internal Passageway to reception, so got comments from passers-by seeing me eat breakfast that had been served to the room mid-afternoon ( yes, they did that) after waking up following an early arrival. Personal room air-conditoner was louder then a Pratt and Whitney, but once used to it at least it kept all the other noises at bay ! Took Mrs. ExS on our first date - 34 years ago ! ( to the day ! )

Thank you G~Man.
I have a feeling that we have had that particular bridge submitted in the past which gave me an edge.
How about a fort this time?

Surely you don't need any further details?

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Clues:
It is on the Musandam Peninsula.
There is a great deal more development there now than when my photo was taken some 20 years ago. There is a very large mosque next door to the fort which did not exist then.

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
I've been around the houses on this one a fair bit.
I really do think this image is of Khasab, not Bukha.
That angle on the round tower at Buhka would have the Gulf in the background, not mountains, and I can't find any other fort further west than Khasab, other than Buhka (which has a big mosque next door).

Re: The Capetonian WOE Thread
Fox3, you have it! It is Bukha.
I think the 20 years between my photo being taken and current Google pictures available have resulted in major developments and changes to the infrastructure and roads. I know my picture is Bukha as I remember travelling up the coast from Ras al Khaimah and taking numerous pics of the spectacular coastline. Also, I have never been to Khasab, did not get that far.
All yours Fox3
