I suppose two factors relate to that - he hadn’t come across a landslip southbound enroute to Carmont and he knew that the northbound train had successfully passed him and he had been cleared to return northbound to Stonehaven where that train was being held due to flooding on the line between there and Aberdeen. Easy to think clearly after the event.

Mrs C16 drove past the accident site this afternoon and said there were lots of vehicles and JCBs around the access track. She said groundworks we’re taking place - she thought maybe they are going to bring the wreckage out to the road rather than remove it via the rail line.

That particular type of unit is cleared to 75mph on that line.

They could be preparing to bring equipment in to cut the wreckage up on site.

No experience of driving a train, but I would not have done that on that day. He has paid the penalty. Unfortunately not alone.

Removing the train wreckage must be more difficult than they thought. The three week closure of our road to facilitate that was due to end tomorrow and it has now been extended by three MONTHS to 13 December. They have built a new "road" and temporary bridges from our closed road to the accident site so that heavy lift equipment could be brought in.

WRT road closure notices, it is often extended way beyond 'expectations' to avoid frequent repeat extensions.

...well a Detective Constable from Police Scotland did. He's part of the team involved in the investigation into the crash. Apparently the Met Office told him about my weather station and website as it's the closest to the crash site, just 2.5 miles away. I upload data throughout each day to the Met Office although they have no personal details. The DC is coming here to talk to me and take away some of my records for 12 August.

To begin with it intrigued me how they found out my name and phone number as I have no identifying email addresses, name, address or phone number on my website. However I do have a Lat/Long noted there and that relates to our house name on the very large scale Council maps. Easy then to find my name from the unexpurgated Electoral Roll and an ex-directory number in my name would be no challenge to the Police. There's no escape from Big Brother....

There are some tabular records for them but the relevant graph is the one below - the white line shows the 30mm of rain here from 0600 until 0830. The orange blob is the amount of solar radiation. The yellow blobs are the wind bouncing either side of north.

He’s coming from Dundee so not here until tomorrow. ‘Naughty’ stuff stowed below decks and Mrs C16 and I are hurriedly tidying - we’ve got into bad habits knowing nobody will be coming into the house over the last few months!

Plod didn’t turn up until today. An interesting morning giving evidence about the weather conditions reported by my weather station on 12 August, the day of the crash. Twelve pages of A4 handwritten statements to sign plus I had to certify the printed downloads I made for him. Not so keen to hear I may have to give evidence if there is a Fatal Accident Inquiry. If that’s delayed 7 years like the Sumburgh helicopter FAI I might not know who I am by then.

Having had the pleasure of having met him I can confirm he is far from it although expecting analysis of that plethora of data points from people like me is a bit too optimistic on his part perhaps!

I've beaten myself with some wet celery and written out 500 times "I must not make weather related posts without including a METAR." What was I thinking - it was quite unforgiveable!
