I had always imagined that Billy Joe had jumped out of shame in getting his girlfriend pregnant or something like that and what was dropped into the river may have been the (aborted) baby but it appears my thinking may have been too florid...

Ah, don't I know the feeling. There can be no worse lot in a poor man's life than to be damned by a woman's "faint" irony!

That song has always fascinated me, perhaps because it encapsulates the way of life in the parts of the south. The reason Billy Joe jumped was because in those days there were no signs with a free helpline for anyone suicidal. There would be no point in writing a song like that today

It is a very evocative song, and far more enigmatic than this, far happier, song, in conjuring up the yellow white languid, or maybe cruel even, heat of an indifferent Delta day.tango15 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 9:57 amThat song has always fascinated me, perhaps because it encapsulates the way of life in the parts of the south. Never heard that song before. I'd heard of the Doobie Bros of course.
One of my other favourites from that genre is 'Summertime'. Do you think Radio 2 would play it if I sent in a request?
