Re: Live music / Concert memories
First gig as a teenager was Humble Pie, supported by Caravan and Hookfoot
Steve Marriott was an unbelievable singer, performer and character frontman
His new guitarist, Clem Clempson (who had just replaced Peter Frampton) was exceptional, and I was thrilled that in later life I worked with him dozens of times

Re: Live music / Concert memories
Stevie Marriott used to live in the village just 4 miles down the road from me. By all accounts he was great character and a wonderful musician. Sad that he came to such an untimely and tragic demise. It seems he got himself into a dreadful mess with the taxman here and fell foul of a mobster manager in the US. Peter Frampton did his best to help him out of that mess it seems.
Beehive cottage (still looks much the same)...

Great musician. Thunderbox remains one of my favourite UK albums (the inner sleeve helped). Frampton was a member, wasn't he?TheGreenGoblin wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 11:12 am

Re: Live music / Concert memories
Gig I missed was Stevie Ray Vaughan at the Sydney Opera House. He'd been working with Bowie on videos for the Let's Dance album. Bowie came into the Imperial Hotel in Coonabarabran (my local at the time) and bought everyone a beer. We were on the point of coming back to the UK, and on our last night in Sydney SRV was playing. MrsP said I should go to the gig, but I had promised her a nice meal in Chinatown, so said "Nah; I'll catch him another time". Before I had the opportunity he was killed in a helicopter crash. RIP.

Went to an Elton John concert, Atlanta Spring '74. The Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour.
A girl I'd never heard of was his opening act... Kiki Dee.
Elton who?
I could have listened to her all night!
Only songs that I remember were "I've Got The Music In Me" and "Step By Step".
Interesting aside...
This was the height of "streaking".
We were in the upper level ot The Omni, Atlanta's then new sports and concert venue, now gone. Started seeing police going up the aisle into the upper reaches.
We looked around to see what the commotion was. A streaker wearing nothing but a climbing harness had two ropes over the beams trying to make his way out over the stage and rappel down with the coil of climbing rope he was carrying.
His plan was foiled because the loose end of his rope was dangling down enough that the police were able to grab it and stop his progress. The rope was the only thing we could see dangling due to the poor lighting, thank goodness.
If that wasn't enough, when the cops grabbed the rope and everyone in our section could see what was going on, Elton launched into the title song from the new album. "When are you going to come down, when are you going to land" are the first lines.
The timing couldn't have been better if it was planned. Our whole section went wild while the rest of the audience was without a clue.

Here in the UK you had to go to a rugby match to catch up on the whole new Streaking wave (not to be confused with that famous Australian band "The New Streakers")...PHXPhlyer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 22, 2020 8:07 pmWent to an Elton John concert, Atlanta Spring '74. The Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour.

The guy in the red coat covering Erika with his Union flag is Ken Baily. He lived not far from us when I grew up in Bournemouth.
Ken Baily's obituary
A real character as you can see from his obituary: The helicopter pilots' mantra: If it hasn't gone wrong then it's just about to...

Not a concert but last year I took the Sproglettes to their, and my, first festival: Latitude. Immensely enjoyable with some great acts. Would recommend it to anyone.
I also took them and Senora Larss to Ariana Grande's concert in Birmingham. I didn't go in. The thought of 18,000 screaming teenage girls.....just too old.

15 years ago I took my then 5 year old daughter to the State Fair. Included in the admission are the "Free Acts", concerts by usually past their prime groups still trying to hang on.
The line up was Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, and Bad Company. She really liked Hall & Oates and was dancing in the aisle.
Her mother didn't appreciate that she came home singing "Man Eater".
Took her and her sister to see Lynyrd Skynyrd. Younger daughter observed "There are nobody here but old people".
Took younger daughter to see Meat Loaf a few years ago. He looked really bad and looked like he was going to croak on stage.

They got me back. Made me take them to "Big Time Rush", a teenage boy band.
You cannot imagine the sound around 5 thousand or so tween and teenagers make.

Re: Live music / Concert memories
Many years ago, back in the early 80's, one of my many younger sisters was keen to go and see David Essex at the Cape Town Good Hope Centre, his presence being a source of much excitement to star starved South African teenage girls in those years of the world's cultural and economic boycott of South Africa. My mother flatly refused to allow her to go unless she and one of her fellow starlings (i.e. shrill teenage girlfriends) were chaperoned by a suitable adult. How they lit on me in that role I shall never know, but cometh the day I drove them into Cape Town and parked and was immediately unnerved by the throng of just sub-hysterical young ladies and immediately formulated a cunning plan whereby I forwent my ticket for another of her little friends who was squawking ticketless in the crowd and arranged to meet them at the same spot after the concert, whereupon I set off for the Gardens and a pleasant pint at the Devonshire Arms and duly picked them up, safe and sound at the required time. Shame on me, but as Tammy said to me "you would have looked so silly and embarrassing to me". Clearly older brothers were totally uncool at such shindigs as I had happily surmised at the time.PHXPhlyer wrote: ↑Tue Dec 08, 2020 2:04 am15 years ago I took my then 5 year old daughter to the State Fair. Crossover from Current Soundtrack thread.
I saw/heard Patti Page at the London Palladium. C.1955-6
I also witnessed at the same venue; The Four Aces, Kitty Kallen, Guy Mitchel and the Billy Cotton Band!
Sorry for not mentioning these in my earlier post, but none of these stuck in my memory as Benny Goodman did. But I know that to some people these 'Little Things Mean a Lot!'

Re: Live music / Concert memories
Was stuck in a German town for the day had to fly back in the evening so couldn't drink. Saw there was a local string quartet playing at the town hall (or whatever they call them) that afternoon so went along. You entered by the stage and went to sit at the back of the hall. They were appalling but I couldn't get out without everyone seeing me and walking past the musicians. British courtesy won out. Will not do that again. I needed a drink after that but it was going to be some hours.
'Yes, Madam, I am drunk, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly.' Sir Winston Churchill.

Re: Live music / Concert memories
Perhaps the most memorable concert I have ever been to was on my second night in Britain when I essayed down from Suburbiton to the dark reaches of Canvey Island to hear Dr Feelgood play. Canvey is a weird place at the best of times but it felt doubly so to this fresh off the plane, innocent Saffer. Shell culture shocked about describes it. Great concert though.Wilco Johnson was in fine form. Lee Brilleaux from the same band was born in Durban! He, sadly, is now dead but Johnson has defied the fates and is still going.
