Why the number 41?

The traditional number of gun salutes is 21. The number is a multiplication of what the Royal Navy would normally do at sea.

An extra 20 guns is added when the salute is given from a Royal Park or setting. Hence, the 41-gun salute.

One might have said 42 is the meaning of life therefore.....

"In fact, it is a tradition much older, and is not a salute at all: The three volleys come from an old battlefield custom. The two warring sides would cease hostilities to clear their dead from the battlefield, and the firing of three volleys meant that the dead had been properly cared for and the side was ready to resume the battle.
The Riflemen in a Funeral detail can number any number between 3 and 10, although 7 is the usual number. ( 3 volleys x 7 rifles = 21 ) But that is coincidence and the number of rifles is not strictly enforced."

Surprisingly relevant to this topic is a three part C4 documentary called Meet the Natives. The on-demand website is very easy to access. It does require a simple registration, but there is no fee or subscription.

Channel 4 Meet the Natives

The basis is that five guys from the Vanuatan island of Tanna visit Britain in the hope of meeting Prince Philip who in their local tradition believe that he's a son of a god. They carry a private message from their Chief and want to deliver it personally to him.

In the three-part film they visit three "tribes" of Britain: Middle Class, Working Class; and Upper Class. They have a very simple view, but sometimes quite insightful. For example, when they visit the city centre of Manchester they are appalled at the concept of homeless people having to sleep on the streets in winter in such a wealthy place. During a visit to a dog grooming parlour, where dogs are pampered in great style, they make a very cogent observation.

Have been to Vanuatu many times (New Hebrides?) , a fabulous place indeed, though not to the Island of Tanna....Mrs Fliegs and I have personally taken many provisions to local schools, have guzzled a lot of Kava, and consumed a few Coconut crabs....free dived million dollar point, trekked the caves, fabulous place is Vanuatu!

The Ni-Vanuatu people are I think from New Guinea, they look it and are very much different to Fijians & Samoans and other South Pacific people.

The daughter of a family friend went to Vanuatu for VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) and ended up staying and marrying the son of a 'chief'.
The girl's mother showered her with 'useful items' from the UK which the daughter resisted as, she said, she was already 'different'.
The pushchair that she sent was placed in the village centre for communal use.

In my many dealings with local Vanuatu people they are most pissed off with their Government doing deals with the Chinese....the most heavily fortified guarded, behind razor wire place in Port Vila is the Chinese embassy....the ugliest building in Port Vila is a hall or some such thing that the Chinese 'Gifted' them.

Up on Espiritu Santo Island, champagne beach is incredible as is the French Port Olry....an amazing gem in the South Pacific...and with a driver who can take you to abandoned WW2 airfields, 'Blue Hole' Lagoons that need to be seen to believed, old WW2 'Nissen Huts' in Luganville.

Also, seeing a coloured light bulb outside a house indicates it is a 'Nakamal', or Kava hut. Filthy muddy water it is...but wow...want good nights sleep?...Kava

My first experience I was 'spaghetti man'....took me 20 mins to walk 50m..lethal stuff, nowadays when in Vanuatu I take a water bottle and the locals fill it, then we drink it from the safety of the hotel.

Curious thing is I remember walking in the pitch dark night of a South Pacific Island and nights are very dark there....its not until a random car happens past do you realise (By way of the car headlights) there are maybe 40 or 50 people walking around you all heading to or coming from the Kava hut...

But you can't see them, they are as pitch black as the night around them....

Foul tasting stuff is good Kava, like heavily peppered muddy water would be the be the best description, why the Nakamals often have 'lollies' to help get rid of the taste...but Oh what a sleep!

There is no fighting or domestic violence with people consuming Kava, but that is becoming more prevalent now they start to consume alcohol...sadly...
