This Yorkshireman had never heard of it!
Me neither, thanks for the lesson but not a word I anticipate making much use of 86 years later.

It's one of those words that you might have heard of but never used and archived in some deep recess of the brain. Once brought to the fore you cannot be sure if you had or had not known of it before.

In contrast a word such as dyak is very much more memorable even though I have probably not read of it in 70 years. Who used it?

Aren't they the natives of Borneo or some such?

Wally - Not commonly used in South Africa but my younger brother used in connection to me when we were having an argument once. Its novelty gave him the advantage and still amuses me to this day!

Another word for a gherkin amongst an older generation of green grocers where I live now.

Ian, true, but why would it stick in the memory from an 8 year old?

All I know is that it is stuck there.

I don't date stamp entries in my memory!

He wrote the Biggles & Gimlet books.

Did he set one or more in Borneo and mention Dyaks then?
If so it could be where I learnt the word.

I remember reading Biggles in Borneo, where he ended flying Bristol Beaufighters if I remember correctly. ;))) I don't remember anything about Dyaks though. Who needs people cluttering up the story when you have aircraft? =))

My favourite Biggles book was 'Biggles in Spain', during the Civil ware where he ends up confronting the evil Goudini and ends up flying a Caponi bomber if I remember correctly (oh yes, and the ship he was on was torpedoed)...

Biggles went to Borneo and Malaysia, I think
Dyaks were certainly involved in 2 books whose plots were astonishingly similar

Blow pipes and poisoned darts no doubt. IIRC Float planes involved. As for similar plots, does an 8 year old bother about that?

I desire the services of some keen Biggles comics collector(s). The task is to provide me with a Biggles page showing Biggles and a Thomson Bros 3 wheel aircraft refueler to add to one of our museum exhibits.

For example...

P.S. What type of aircraft is the one in this picture? (Miles, Erco or ???

Looks like a Miles Messenger to me...in the very early 60s I spent a lot of time pushing Messenger G-AKKG in and out of this Gliding School hangar at Christchurch airfield (UK). It was owned by Ben Heron who also owned a car dealership in Bournemouth. It lost its prop on take off one day but was landed safely. Ben also owned Comanche N6183P which was kept in the same hangar. Memories!

I read most of the Biggles book but can't remember many of the titles. I remember the first I read, 'Biggles Flies Again' , and 'Biggles, Air Detective'. Biggles Flies Undone?

Thanks, that does indeed look like the one! I should think the refueler should have been able to handle is fuel requirements.

BTW, we have a visitor to the museum last week while I was fiddling with the refueler's engine. He make some grumpy remark about the little Ford 10 engine and top speed etc.
He gave a disgusted sort of snort when I told him 7Kmph top speed and almost lost his bladder control when I told him it have a longer range than his Cessna! I reckon she would do several thousand miles on a full tank!

At which point you hung up 'in her ear'ole,' I hope!

She shall not be 'reaching out' to me again.....grumpy old man I must have become!!=
At least though she got the message, one hopes. Still reckon you should have told her that unless she is/was a member of the Four Tops etc..

Anyway, well done! :-bd

(I'm ignoring the spelling of fibre)
