Euphemisms that make you smile.
In a similar vein to Gobbers topic on the misuse of English, what about the proper use of our versatile language?
The scope is endless.
One that I heard recently that made me smile was, and to be fair he was hot...."Bloody hell, I'm sweating like a rapist!"
Always looking to add to my collection of these useful expressions.

After a particularly heavy beer/ curry session “ I’ve got an arse like a blood orange “
When all else fails, read the instructions.

Re: Euphemisms that make you smile.
One passes water, or other vehicles on the road, as Ogden Nash (or maybe somebody like Hilaire Belloc) so wittily point pointed out...
Actually that epitaph is so bad that I suspect it would not pass muster with either of the esteemed aforementioned men.He passed the bobby without any fuss,
He passed the cart of hay...
He tried to pass the swerving bus
Then he passed away...

A couple that have taken my fancy over the years...
"Don't upset her, mate, she's surfing the crimson wave." should be self explanatory. For a bloke who went into unnecessary detail in his work..."He'd make bullseyes out of the Elgin Marbles.'

AK - have you got a gentler, less severe word for euphemisms?

Re: Euphemisms that make you smile.
From the Greek euphemia - eu (good) and phemism (phonetic speech).
To replace potentially unpleasant, contentious, or offensive word(s) with innocuous or bland one(s) while still imparting the gist of the meaning, often for humorous effect.
Woosh - the sound of the meaning missing the unhallowed transom of the target and travelling onwards unheeded and misunderstood for eternity...

Traitor! - a treacherous person or scorpion, as in the scorpion on the back of the green frog.TheGreenGoblin wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 10:03 amFrom the Greek euphemia - eu (good) and phemism (phonetic speech).

euphonium = (literally) good or well sounding!G-CPTN wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 10:09 amSo where does Euphonium fit?TheGreenGoblin wrote: ↑Wed Jun 09, 2021 10:03 amFrom the Greek euphemia - eu (good) and phemism (phonetic speech).
euphemism
To make speech that might be good sound a little better as in the case of 'euphemismos' to use of a favorable word in place of an inauspicious one, superstitious avoidance of words of ill-omen during religious ceremonies," also of substitutions such as Eumenides for the Furies.

'Bathroom' for toilet. A very annoying euphemism that has crept over the Atlantic.
I like 'netty' or 'cludgie', which are amusing and a bit less silly.

Re: Euphemisms that make you smile.
Cludgie sounds far worse than toilet to me, but, hey, I am just a guttural South African with not a jot of the mellifluous mastery of the nuance of the language and the phonemes that the Celts have!
Cludgie does sound better than the German slang for the room that houses same which is "abort" (literally 'shithouse' or Scheißhaus rather than restroom, which truly is a euphemism)!
