Grab Bags!

#1 Post by 1DC » Fri Jul 16, 2021 11:58 am

Mrs 1DC has just posed an interesting question after reading about the flooding in Europe and people getting knocks on the door and being asked to evacuate as soon as possible.
If it happened to us what would we take with us and how long would it take to gather our stuff together, thinking about it we have stuff in the safe, study, and other files so would probably take about an hour to sort out. We probably should put everything in one place so it is easy to pick up if required.
Is everyone else more efficient than us and ready to go if told to evacuate or haven't you considered it??

Simply put, yes. One aluminum grab-and-run case full of documents hangs from a hook in the cellar. Three leather wallets in the safe contain passports and driving licences and medical cards. Take out, put in grab-and-run case, five minutes. Take both cars, leave electric gate open for emergency services, head out of smoke. Yes, we reviewed procedures this afternoon.

Yes, we had a practice run last year due to possible fire evacuation. Important documents, pets, NAS box (containing a copy of all the digital photos), actual photo negatives. That's the primary set of things to save, then we would go add some other stuff if there was time.

For fire, leave the garden hose connected to the water supply and in an obvious place - if the fire team checks the garden and finds a small fire, having a hose to hand to immediately start wetting stuff down is important, that was highlighted in various bits of TV news coverage about how it's helpful.

Fire department here usually cut the water to discourage home fire fighting. Our municipal urbanisation chopper dip pool is full, they checked today.

I assume around here that the hydrants are fed from the same water main as the houses, so cutting the water would deprive them of their own supply. Obviously less true out in the country where there are neither houses nor hydrants.

During last year' (or was it the year before's) bushfires I put together a grab box of essentials that is still there, although the HDD should be updated. The clothes in it aren't fashionable, but would keep us warm or cool, depending on the temperatures we encounter.

During the ACT bushfires quite a few years ago, friends put all their essential paperwork, comuters etc in their car in the driveway, in case they had to make a quick escape. The car burned out, their house was unharmed.

Log books a bottle of scotch and then a few bits and pieces.

Mrs Ex-Ascot points out that grab bags are not a good idea with our robberies record. They would just be grabbed by the robbers.

Nurses... always the wild bunch! :-ss =))

A proper Grab Bag should contain at least 2 passports of different nationalities, multiple currencies, the names of 7 good lawyers from at least two continents, Viagra, condoms, whisky, poetry and two complimentary admission tickets to the Carl Lagerfeld Bondage Dungeons in Bremehaven.

A very impressive list TGG. I wish I had a need for such a bag.
