Nominative determinism in action!
Drivers wanted, now is it a lack of priori or a posteriori reasoning, leading to the need for new drivers after two absolutely preventable accidents based upon the existence of practical previous experience (one of our buses crashed at the bridge before) as well as theoretical knowledge (how high are the local bridges and how tall are our buses), that points to the cause of this recent accident? =))

I note from C16's earlier post that the poor driver in this case has had a long and hitherto unblemished driving record. Methinks one might look to the ops management at this company for the essential faults in its modus operandi.

I agree it does seem like an ops problem, either issuing the wrong vehicle for the route, or inadequate route training.
I'd also put some blame on the council. The company should be losing big contracts for this kind of thing, plus maybe penalty clauses.
The finances is the only language most companies understand these days.

I have followed up on the accident that C16 referred to and that occurred in Scotland, so I stand corrected, but nonetheless, the points made above still stand.

We went up onto Dartmoor yesterday, had lunch and then went for a rugged walk to Wistman's wood, 400 metres above sea level, only about five km walking but needed lots of concentration because in some places the gaps between the boulders were deep enough to snap your leg, feeling a bit achy today.

Every Nova Scotian will tell you there's no adders in the Minas Basin.

p.s. Does it count if you only see one?

I prefer this kind of sand adder! It can count to ∞ and then 1 beyond.

These do too, often with an OR gate followed by a cascade of adders and then an AND gate! ;)))

Slippery and shifty buggers those full adders.

Overcast, drizzly, 9.1°C expecting 10°C and more rain.

New Moon earlier this morning.

Out soon for the morning; a small salmon tail-fillet thawing to cook for lunch on my return.

My Uni lecturer only allowed us to use NAND gates to build anything - they were much cheaper than any other kind.

Sensible bloke. :)

Worked for an automotive electronics company (who were the primary UK based manufacturer of the BBC micro just before I first arrived in the UK), and cost, as always, was the primary factor in all design considerations. Me and my academic view of these things, at least I had some mathematics to back me up, was soon put in its place! Most enjoyable job I ever had, my boss and I had a very erratic relationship. He would fire me at least once a month and then demand I come back to finish the argument. He was most often right, but once or twice I was too. I was earning a pittance given what we were doing for Jaguar and Ford at the time... My boss was a Geordie, he gave me my big chance and I owe him big time... RIP Doug!

Thank God for the multi disciplinary courses that UCT offered in those days. My English tutor, John Coetzee (the bloke who went on to win the Booker and Noble Prize for literature) was also a mathematician and taught me all , or the little, I know about about generative grammars and Backus–Naur form in the design of compilers, all this in the pursuit of entry to a Law Degree. :))

NB - Coetzee worked here in the UK for IBM, using the Harwell mainframe to run aerodynamic modelling algorithms during the evolution of the SR2... before he went onto to the USA where he was expelled for his activism against the Vietnam war. He lives in Australia these days...

Enough of these divisive comments!

Can't sleep.
Have tidied house, planned weeks of work, and am now contemplating batch cooking.

Wasting Away in Hospitalville

Jimmy Buffett hospitalized, postpones show

https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/19/entertai ... index.html

A Jimmy Buffett & the Coral Reefer Band concert scheduled to be held in Charleston, South Carolina this weekend, has been postponed due to the singer being hospitalized.

Buffett announced the news in posts on both his site and on social media.

“Two days ago, I was just back from a trip to the Bahamas, thawing out from the California ‘winter tour,’ and chomping at the bit to get to Charleston,” his note reads. “I had to stop in Boston for a check-up but wound up back in the hospital to address some issues that needed immediate attention.”

Buffett added, “Growing old is not for sissies, I promise you.”

The 76-year-old did not share exactly what is ailing him, but promised to perform his postponed concert as soon as he is able.

“Thank you for your prayers and thoughts, your amazing years of loyalty, and just remember, ‘NOT YET!’” his note ended.

Ticket holders will receive emailed information regarding the rescheduled date.

Arrived back in Japan on Wednesday afternoon and after doing Aviation Medical at the Medical centre at Haneda Airport, proceeded to fly up to Hokkaido and thence travel to the Gliding Club at Takikawa where I will be working as a Tug Pilot for the next three months.

Unfortunately managed to pick up some fluish type bug just before I left home so still feeling slightly under the weather. Thankfully I have had the first two days off so have been occupying myself in other ways. (Admiring Japanese Ladies from a distance being one. :ymdevil: )

I can report that a previous opinion I once made re the capacity of the average Japanese Male in being unable to leave a clean kitchen behind him in the Clubhouse lodge is unchanged. Spent about 5 hours scrubbing the Bejaysus out of virtually everything!! At least I did not, as in one previous occasion, find mould growing in one frying pan!

Hopefully committing Aviation tomorrow.

Must the the season for Gnees.
Entirely my own careless fault, I slipped on damp concrete today and landed on left gnee.
Ice pack, arnica; have Epsom salts in reserve if swelling reappears.
Will have the Man who Mows the Lawns water-blast the concrete, which of course should have been done ages ago.

Re. school bus getting wedged under low bridge, we have the same problem here. Vans get stuck under it with monotonous regularity. City keeps coming up with plans to avoid future collisions. Since this article posted, another idiot has got stuck. The bridge was built in the 1930s and it is remarkable it has withstood all the battering. Whatever the City comes up with next, they can't cure stupid!
