Re. school bus getting wedged under low bridge, we have the same problem here. Vans get stuck under it with monotonous regularity. City keeps coming up with plans to avoid future collisions. Since this article posted, another idiot has got stuck. The bridge was built in the 1930s and it is remarkable it has withstood all the battering. Whatever the City comes up with next, they can't cure stupid!

I once hired a tall panel van for a move.
Before moving off, I conscientiously checked for the height.
Not marked on dash, not in paperwork, hiring clerk didn't know either.
Made rough estimate with tape measure, took roundabout route.

A few years ago, whilst touring Transylvania, I noticed that the Romanians had constructed substantial height barriers about 25 m before railway bridges, tunnel entrances etc. The horizontal barrier could be raised to extricate any lorry/bus which it had stopped. That works so long as the workers don't leave the barriers up because "drivers keep hitting them".

I think that the average number of cans of deodorant per person bought a year is 10. No I think 1.

Much like the "Can Opener", the 11' 8" bridge in Durham, NC, which is still catching a few despite the warning systems and being raised to 12' 4" -

Jimmy Buffett hospitalized, postpones show

https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/19/entertai ... index.html

A Jimmy Buffett & the Coral Reefer Band concert scheduled to be held in Charleston, South Carolina this weekend, has been postponed due to the singer being hospitalized.

Buffett announced the news in posts on both his site and on social media.

“Two days ago, I was just back from a trip to the Bahamas, thawing out from the California ‘winter tour,’ and chomping at the bit to get to Charleston,” his note reads. “I had to stop in Boston for a check-up but wound up back in the hospital to address some issues that needed immediate attention.”

Buffett added, “Growing old is not for sissies, I promise you.”

The 76-year-old did not share exactly what is ailing him, but promised to perform his postponed concert as soon as he is able.

“Thank you for your prayers and thoughts, your amazing years of loyalty, and just remember, ‘NOT YET!’” his note ended.

Ticket holders will receive emailed information regarding the rescheduled date.

Sorry to hear Mr Buffett is unwell. I always think of warm tropical evenings with something cold and alcoholic, a margarita would be just fine, in one hand when I hear his music. I have always envied him his aircraft but vicariously enjoyed his flying of them through his music. vide. Jamaica Mistaica.

Many nights spent malingering listening to his music, waiting for the ghost of Esther Williams to do a lap of the fabulous pool, when staying at The Raleigh Hotel on Miami South Beach back in the day.

Mrs 4ma is a lot better - nasty thing is pneumonia - and is allowing me to return to canal activities on Monday. She is still feeling a bit weak and tired but she was able to "cook" the salad we had for tea.

Good to hear that she is better, 4ma. I can but agree with your comment re pneumonia.

It nearly finished me after my prang in PNG all those years ago. My left lung was punctured and collapsed and had pneumonia in the right one!

As someone said to me long afterwards when I made a remark that I didn`t know how I survived, she simply said to me that, `it wasn`t your time!` (to go)

Evening all, been quite warm here today.

Off at a dog show with Faraday and Cassini. Cassini got a Baby Puppy Group 3 placement for the working group, Faraday got her first-ever owner-handled group placement with an OHG4. Really pleased for her to finally get one. She also got to do a couple of FastCAT runs, which were her fastest two so far this year.

Took the generator with me so we could use the van air conditioner - expected over 30C. Except it didn't work, so I had to put the generator away and rely on fans. Stripped it down, determined there were volts on the input plug but not at the AC unit, so I dismantled the socket on the back of the van to discover that the wires had been pulled out. Reconnected them, put it all back together, and it works. Useful for tomorrow, supposed to be even hotter.

Morning.

Only 15c and grey sky above. Rain forecast for midmorning.

Hope Mrs 4ma's health improves.

My knee is now back pain wise, where it was two days ago. Feels like nerves/ligaments trapped(sciatica type pain) Managed a full six hours uninterrupted in mi bed last night though.

Morning all. Another sunny day. Dreams last night of someone (from this site?) flying a Spitfire over us at low altitude.
