Unmitigated telephonic disaster for Mrs Jim in the last 36 hours!
Started yesterday with the thing losing connection with the provider - 5 bars on mine, 0 on hers. Re-booted. All well. Then at lunchtime it failed in the middle of a call when she was getting "talked in" to a charity, the recipient of our harvest festival gifts. Lost and angry, she was.
But, as if planned, Lord knows how, and for the first time, she dropped the thing into the loo, just having had a pee!
Now, three guesses as to whose fault all this is.
Anyway, I dismantled and dried the thing, best as i could, and put it in the airing cupboard. By lunchtime today it would switch on and I had hoped to get her contact lists etc off the thing (I've put her sim into a spare phone I meant to sell on) But it will get no further than the entry screen; it won't respond to swipes, thumps, button-pushes, Anglo-Saxon: anything.
A replacement is on the way from the SA river company, But I strongly suspect that the original problem was the sim, and a replacement will be needed.
I intend to remain very calm.

If it is any comfort, dropping it in the loo is the single most common cause of water damage to phones.
Best wishes for a successful outcome.

Likewise here, blue dome and laundry billowing on the line this morning.
Had visit earlier by lady from Statistics Dept. conducting that Household Economic Survey, took about twenty minutes, general information-gathering I suppose. I was given a couple of notepads and ballpoint pens for being a good citizen.
Out shortly for a couple of errands and supermarketing.

Probably bit late for a comment, but have memories of father dealing with BB's some 75 years ago. They were believed to have escaped from the arms houses, then bomb buildings up the road. Close all doors and windows, and block off all gaps, tops and bottoms. Then ignite a couple of table spoons full of sulphur on a saucer in each room, and allow to burn out. Seemed to be very effective. Needed lots of ventilation afterwards.

Morning folks. Nice day but a bit hazy not too hot yet. Just polished my cane post repair. Four nicks in it. Suspect used by someone else during its prolonged absence or just thrown into a corner or on workbench. Now sold no consideration for it. Great initial job but not going back to him. Don't think that the concept of post sales service has reached here yet.

G'day,
18c at play ball time (circa 0900L)
Up to 23c now, 25c from the stones. Dome.
A National Holiday, Columbus Day, the day when explorer Christopher Columbus completed his journey across the Atlantic Ocean and landed in the “New World.”
Won't be much open today so a day for domestic chores.
Many will still be closed mañana so getting a long weekend.

A national holiday here also, Hispanic Day, same reason as above despite being in Catalunia. Needed shopping, reasonably-priced Spanish supermarket closed, cost double at a supermarket that caters for foreigners but was open.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
In 1992, we had the bright idea(!) of celebrating Columbus' discovery of the New World by flying one of his direct descendants from Seville to the Bahamas for the 500th anniversary in a 125. Not entirely altruistic of course, but something a little different, that we thought would attract media attention on both sides of the Atlantic. We contacted his descendant via the British Consulate in Seville, and the initial reaction was enthusiastic, so yours truly was sent to Sevilla to draft out a plan. The man concerned lived in a huge house, with immaculate grounds tended to within an inch of their lives. The whole place was very Downton Abbey, with servants, and peacocks wandering on the lawn. He spoke excellent upper-class English, although he had never been educated in England. He was enthusiastic initially, but as time went on he became less so. It transpired that word had reached him that were he to undertake the journey, there would have been demonstrations by indigenous people from around the Americas. This of course would put a dampener on our PR efforts, so it was mutually agreed to abandon the idea. Pity really, The Bahamas is so nice in October...Wodrick wrote: ↑Thu Oct 12, 2023 8:27 amG'day,

The night guards have been systematically destroying their garden chair with their sights on our two new ones. It fell apart last night. They sleep in the thing fully reclined for the majority of the night. I have produced a director's chair to replace it. They have taken the broken chair away to try to repair it. They think that we are stupid.

Good morning, partly cloudy today so stars were a bit faint earlier.
7.7°C now, expecting 19°C and fresh north-westerlies.
DD1 had hoped to call in today but we will miss each other, as I have to be out from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.

8/15 for me, too. Might have been better if I kept up with the world of showbiz.

Good morning all, 9/15 today.
Clear blue sky today, currently 14C, forecast max 24C. Lots of thunder and strong wind last night, but only a little rain here. Bob may have had more.
Workshop morning ahead. might be Poets Day this afternoon.

8/15 Hydro, the weather last night was as follows, nil rain, wind gusting at 63k/h to 83k/h according to the RAAF base records, it certainly gave one the
impression that the roof was likely to depart had it been a little stronger. A morning of cleaning up lots of twigs, dead branches and leaves is called for.

Roof reinforcement advice available, bob2s. We sure get some practice here!

Bob2s, much the same as us then. When I looked at the radar there was a line of heavy rain over the mountains, thought it might have reached you. Obviously not.

An overcast day today, house was cooler indoors than outside when I came home.
Tomorrow, Saturday, is Election Day in NZ, could have voted early but prefer to do so on the day.
Forecast is for moderate gales, 54km/h, and perhaps some spillover rain from the NW.
