Then I went through my father's stamp collection, lots of inserts to the Stanley Gibbon's New Age and Windsor albums.

There are thousands of stamps, including a few rarities, does anyone collect stamps these days?

The collection, mostly UK and the Empire, takes up 3 chests of drawers.

We do live in the throwaway society.
I sold my collection to an auction house. Only British from QV through to Machins. Got £££ for the lot. I think it was Bonhams but you can search for stamp auctioneers. Free collection (UK) and they could make an offer or I could let them auction them. I sold it to them. I knew what I was getting and would not be paying any fees.

Had I turned down their offer I would have had to pay return postage.

It was not this company https://www.bing.com/ck/a?!&&p=cb655480 ... RleA&ntb=1 but I traded with them for many years.

A Chinook just flew over Teddington heading west. Where would that have been going?

The Thames?

Oh, you meant a helicopter, not a fish.

Helicopter Route H3 in the London Control Zone goes over Teddington, track is very roughly east/west, although with twin engines Chinooks can be cleared off route. Possibly he was going home to Odiham.

What does the 'YM' stand for (YM Hall)? (see Orkney article https://hoyorkney.com/2020/10/new-horiz ... nity-hall/ )

I would guess that the YM name is derived from YMCA but am open to correction by those that know.

My hypothesis is that the hall was in some way connected with the YMCA at some time in its history. I do know that local YMCA halls, and hostels were used as barracks, canteens, fitness training centres and even dormitories for the young men or conscipts by the services during WW1.

Post WW1 in South Africa many such venues or halls were set up by the MOTH's.

They served in memoriam and to help and support ex servicemen and their families. The MOTHS also built houses for such folks. Today many memorial halls serve as community halls, gyms and the like as well.

Unlike the German counterpart, the Order of the Tin Hats, aimed to be non political and not militaristic.

It should be noted that the MOTHS did little or nothing for the many black South African soldiers who had served (often in non combatant roles) but who also died, were injured or left destitute in both the 1st and 2nd World Wars.

Morning all from Railway Cuttings (although not in East Cheam). Southwest railway next to the flat, LHR departures yesterday and now H3 also overhead. A few NRs in a boat and flatulent hippos would be a welcome change.

We can certainly do the Rooibos for you GA but not the rusks. Not sure if they sell them here.

Three weeks until the managers of the safari camp leave. They gave two months notice. The CEO from JNB has just landed to carry out interviews. This is going to be a disaster. We sit on the side lines with interest. He has asked for my advice in the past. Really do not know what to tell him now.

Edit. My shopping manager tells me that Ouma rusks are available here in all sorts of different flavours.

Hippos

My secondary school used to organise popular events with 'personalities', and 'Flanders and Swan' was one of those memorable events.

Morning, all. Another morning of IKEA assembly ahead. Then Covid booster shots this afternoon, essential for taking the train back thru a highly-infected France at the end of the month. Although last time we escaped Covid but caught Whooping Cough at the Gare de Lyon. Semper Gaul...
