Very mild today at 22°C. This will not be the case tomorrow.

Watched the film Lancaster today: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12384428/
Profoundly impressive and deeply moving.
The Greatest Generation.

TGA, I'm not surprised you were stirred, as you flew by the dams, to think of
"...those who in their lives fought for life,
Who wore at their hearts the fire’s centre.
Born of the sun, they travelled a short while toward the sun
And left the vivid air signed with their honour.
"
And with the morn, those angel faces smile...

Morning all. Looks like Tall Bird has ponied up for subs. Hopefully she will come out to play again :YMHUG: Reddo, Karearea and myself are seriously outnumbered.

Stress test went OK-awaiting results. Only took 2 hours. Much quicker than the previous ones :-bd

A lovely poem Karearea.
The Truly Great
BY STEPHEN SPENDER
I think continually of those who were truly great.
Who, from the womb, remembered the soul’s history
Through corridors of light, where the hours are suns,
Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition
Was that their lips, still touched with fire,
Should tell of the Spirit, clothed from head to foot in song.
And who hoarded from the Spring branches
The desires falling across their bodies like blossoms.

What is precious, is never to forget
The essential delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs
Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth.
Never to deny its pleasure in the morning simple light
Nor its grave evening demand for love.
Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother
With noise and fog, the flowering of the spirit.

Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields,
See how these names are fêted by the waving grass
And by the streamers of white cloud
And whispers of wind in the listening sky.
The names of those who in their lives fought for life,
Who wore at their hearts the fire’s centre.
Born of the sun, they travelled a short while toward the sun
And left the vivid air signed with their honour.
Must admit that flying around the dams was quite an emotional thing, rendered slightly surreal by having to respond to requests for my intended route by the ever efficient and helpful German controllers, in an accurate way (mostly by looking for villages in the local area around the dams) without making it painfully obvious that I was doing a "dams tour!"... ;)))
My necessaries are embark'd: farewell. Adieu! I have too grieved a heart to take a tedious leave.

Good Moaning,

High cloud, guess 24c currently 25c, 56% so won't feel great.

My water supply is agricultural from a spring about 10km away.
As this house is an expanded finca (farmhouse) it has a fair amount of tankage to store water.
Originally this was 135,000 litres. We have reduced to 90,000. To do our irrigation of the non-cultivated Olives and Avocados
we have shares in the water company, in our case two entitling us to reduced rate water of 35,000 litres every eight days.

Now that my pond is almost completely empty it is obvious that it needs re-tiling.
My Tiler is proposing to re-tile the pond, make good the edging, level the terracing, and random tile the sides of the house.
That's the Spanish cure for damp. And put a drain round the garage.
All for one share, no money to change hands !
Like this all round the house 1m high.

Been a hectic couple of days. Actually yesterday was stressful, with a hospital appointment in Marbella at 10.15. Actually got to see an apprentice consultant, who looked about 16 years old, an hour and a half late. She had to go ask the proper consultant twice, in the room next door, as unable to answer questions I made. Finally agreed on a way forward with a new scan to be completed ( present one they are working to is nearly two years old) and a bone density test plus blood test. All this could have been done at my last appointment 10 days previously.
Then had to go to branch hospital nearer home to organize blood test. That unusually took half an hour of queuing , as the place was mobbed. Was quite tired by time I got home.
Today been out doing shopping. Everywhere was busy again. Feet up now.

In the corner of some foreign field.

Planning to attend this ceremony in Willingale on Sunday,
As a result of long planning and co-operation between the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust (ABCT) - the world’s first national airfield charity - and various more local elements, three memorials will be unveiled during the weekend of 1/2 October 2022 to commemorate Hornchurch, Willingale and Matching Airfields.

RAF Ongar/Willingale, was a World War Two bomber airfield which opened in June 1943. American Martin B-26 Marauder medium bombers of the 387th Bombardment Group quickly moved in and attacked many tactical targets in occupied Europe until after D-Day. Following the departure of this unit, Chipping Ongar witnessed more mixed American and RAF use until after the end of World War Two, following which civil aviation occurred until 1948. As with Hornchurch much of this airfield has now vanished, though there is still some civil light aircraft use from a small part of the site.
Plenty of ghosts around there, in my fevered imagination anyway. I have often stood on the remains of the huge runway there on a blustery winter's afternoon and thought I heard a lone bomber returning... One can still find the detritus of war being uncovered on what remains of the airfield as it slowly returns to agricultural use
Some photos of the ceremony to which I arrived late due to late departure for the walk to the site ... (thanks to Dave Mannion for sharing this footage with me)...

Pretty little snowflakes falling in the rain here at the moment, a merry 2.8°C.
"Aww, innit lovely".

Thinking of those whose work takes them out in it.

No snow flakes here, just drizzle. Hang on! wait a minute! Now the drizzle is just floating down. If I was in Orkland I would say it was snow.

Six months from September/October equates to March/April in the northern hemisphere - which are hardly the months when we expect 'snow' - though not unknown.

What months would you expect snow Dununda?

An expert hydrologist told me that NZ gets more snow in October than any other month of the year.

Mrs 1DC and I went to get tested for deafness yesterday, she gets an appointment for earring aids next week and I get referred to ENT at the hospital.Apparantly the difference between my port and starboard ears is so great it needs looking at by an expert! Number 1 daughter wants to know if I'm ever going to be normal like proper people..
Been a nice day on the Humber again, was enticed into a walk by the sea fortunately the Yorkies all seem to have gone home and it was pleasantly quiet.

Anything's possible.
Away from the actual mountains and foothills, snowfalls maybe every two to ten years, and depends on altitude: at 250m asl, snow could fall in any month from March to November. Then there might be several consecutive winters with none.
At a lower altitude have seen, over 45 years or so, a snowfall on the ground May to November. Rarely lies more than a day.
Dynamic weather systems from the deep south, proximity to ocean, landforms, all have a bearing.
Temps. will be back up in the teens Celsius by the weekend.
Exciting and interesting weather always!

Some whacking big flakes coming down now and 1.8°C.
And with the morn, those angel faces smile...

This huge old house in the Pyranees, the former rectory, is cold tonight. Logs didn't burn too well. Back down to the coast tomorrow and to our own house at 600' asl, which seems high but nothing like here.

I had that when I went in for a hearing test too. Talked to the specialist and we established that it had pretty much always been like that and wasn't some recent degenerative condition.

Morning folks. A very pleasant long weekend at Kwara. Mainly rich Brits. All very pleasant. The duty Malaka was a German young guy (18+) with his parents. Fortunately not there all weekend. Spoke loudly. When meals were announced he actually ran to be first at the table and took head position which should be a guide or manager. Same with the buffets he ran to be first there. As the most Júnior guest by far he should have hung back. Potential Hitler youth.

On arrival, there are welcome fruit cocktail drinks. We walked past to get to the beer. They said no, no, these are yours and gave us a scotch each. :YMPARTY: They didn't even try to offer us any activities. A very pleasant time reading in the sitting area by the pool, next to our chalet, drinking beer from the bar there. Many animals came to us.

A bit of drama on the last night. We had a buffet by the fire. To get to the table from the buffet you had to pass around the fire on the ground. Most of us achieved this but one chap tried to walk through it. :-o He was definitely sober. He fell over and was dragged out by the young guy. His wife is a consultant general surgeon. This would normally be an aeromed job. His wife did some emergency first aid with people running backwards and forwards with jugs of cold water. He was carried back to their room where the treatment continued with the use of the camp's extensive first aid chest. 12 hours later she said that they would continue with their holiday which only had a few more days to go. Nobody can work out why he did it. Sent a message to him to stop trying to walk on hot coals, try snake charming instead.

Did you get the opportunity to do the German "towel test".

You can walk across coals, firewalking as you know it! I have done it, but you need to prepare the coal bed carefully, by raking them, the coals I mean, and to ensure that your feet are wet before you start. Falling over is disastrous as a very large percentage of your skin's surface area makes contact with the coals for a relatively long period.

Young youthful Saffer feet are often hardened from years of walking around bare footed, playing rugby bare footed, and wearing velskoene (or veldskoene if you really must) without socks. You can tell an Englishman by the wearing of socks with so called "desert boots!"

You should try it Ex-Ascot. just don't fall over, and move quickly. :)

The WhenWe's (Rhodesians) were also very hot on the correct wearing of vellies... the Rhodesians also always wore shorts no matter what the weather. You could the spot the Rhodie in Cape Town in winter because his legs would be blue!

Net soos die gat kant van 'n bobbejaan! =))

The Tao of the Vellie

You will note that the Rhodie that wrote that most accurate article, now lives in New Zealand, but note the ludicrous comment from one commentator...

"When we went on our hols ‘down South’ you could always spot the difference between the South Africans who wore socks and the Rhodesians who didn’t. Cultural thing."

Now that okie is just trying to tune us Saffers kak! We invented the vellie and taught those Rhodesian ou's how to wear them!
My necessaries are embark'd: farewell. Adieu! I have too grieved a heart to take a tedious leave.
