Desert fogs are fascinating and none more so than the one that forms on the Namibian coast where the cold Benguela current brings thick fogs to the Namib desert which are almost the only source of moisture in some parts. Groundwater is also part of the hydrological cycle in the Namib desert and also the source of desert fogs as well.

My necessaries are embark'd: farewell. Adieu! I have too grieved a heart to take a tedious leave.

Happy Birthday Hounds!
Night walk completed. 3.5km, 5000 steps. Cool but no wind: I'm perspiring!

Report in the newspaper this morning of complaints about party boats on Sydney Harbour at night, playin 'doof-doof' music. Seems like its a global problem.

20c at present, forecast 26c
Had a good day yesterday, work reunion. I arrived early, and there were only three already there. I only knew one of them well and one slightly. the third looked slightly familiar and was looking at me as though he should have known me. After introductions he asked if I'd worked with an old colleague, long deceased. When I replied that I'd spent my 21st birthday with said colleague and others on my first field trip at the mess of one of the dams that was being enlarged, having beer poured into me, the penny dropped. He'd been one of those pouring beer into me. Our paths had never crossed during the 55 years since, so we took up with the beers where we had left off.
Lots of other colleagues there, and many reminiscences. Young ladies we used to have politically incorrect thoughts (and discussions) about are now grandmothers. One engineer who had never learned anything about music decided to learn piano when he retired, and now has a second career as a songwriter.
Last night was another, quieter Christmas do for our woodworking group, with a show and tell of our work. I took along a prototype of a box I'd made - very simple but I needed to test that I had some compound angles and techniques right. While I was admiring a table made by a young couple, the lady insisted that I sell the box to her. Not bad for something that was destined to sit in the back of a cupboard somewhere.
A quiet day is planned for today.

Not just on boats. We have idiots in cars where all you can hear is the 'doof-doof' even from several cars away in traffic. There's even one who drives near here and I can hear it indoors with the doors and windows closed and he's probably in the next street. His hearing must be shot to hell.

My ultimate invention would ne a transmitter that would take over an offending vehicle's sound system and play whatever my system is playing.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
The distant booming of music from Carnival and Fiesta events below us in Roses is a thing of the past: 2019 was the last time we heard that. Three km away it still shook our house. Each float towed a generator for the sound systems, and processions continued to five am. However earlier this year the sheds where all the floats and generators were stored went on fire, so I suspect the return to normality in 2023 will be quieter.

Hydromet; I believe that the words 'doof doof' and 'music' are a contradiction in terms.'doof-doof' music.
Likewise with 'Rap' and 'music.'

Have set alarm for 3:30am so I can take an interest in the Morocco/Spain game at 4am.
Not all that warm here at the moment, 12°C after a max. of 21°C this morning.
All overcast and dull, don't think the Moon will show through.

Morning folks.
Cloudy presently the guessers do say. Not a very good guess, as it's a clear blue sky with only a few slithers of high cloud. 12c: High of 16c.
Another public holiday.
Madam wants Xmas tree put up today.

Public holiday Tuesday and Thursday. How does anything ever get done here. Answer is, it doesn't. A friend has been building a magnificent house here. So far it's two years behind schedule. As soon as he turns his back the workers are gone.
Cold here and windy. Cats not turned up for breakfast. All snugglywarm in their nests in the forest.

UK winter fuel payment just arrived in account. Meanwhile Spain is pondering applying a levy on private electricity customers to help struggling utility companies.
Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
We went out to a restaurant in Helsinki last night, with relations of wife.
I noticed that "marbeled" beef was on the menu.
Is this a recent trend as I have only seen the term recently.
Perhaps it is following from "pulled" pork, another, to my mind fairly recently introduced, past participle.

Here you go talmacapt
Also called intramuscular fat, marbling adds flavor and is one of the criteria for judging the quality of cuts of meat. In general, the more marbling it contains, the better a cut of meat is. Note that we're not talking about the layer of fat on the outside of the steak or roast, which can be trimmed away.
New in the sense that people used to think fat equally fatty rather than flavoursome.

Ah yes; And that sort of beef is highly sought after (and priced) in Japan, as I found way back in the mid 90's when I first travelled there for a three month stint to fly a Glider Tug for a full time Gliding organisation in Hokkaido. In general, the more marbling it contains, the better a cut of meat is
After I returned to Australia I went to my old home town in the Barossa Valley to visit my Widowed Mother, and happened to run into the old Family Doctor who had heard of my Japan visit and wanted to know of my experiences there.
He asked me about the food etc and I mentioned the marbled beef and his comment was most interesting. It went something like...
"Of course they would prize such beef. It is far healthier, and back in the old days here in Australia we knew that, and would try to get it ourselves!"
He added, with some disgust evident in his voice, "But it went out of fashion!!"
