I think I'll add the Islander to that thread about aircraft which are particularly fit for purpose.ricardian wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 12:11 pmRelatively peaceful night weatherwise. However, things changed at about 10am. Strong winds and power cut, fortunately power restored within 10 minutes. All ferries cancelled for the day. Flights from Edinburgh and from Inverness to Kirkwall circled Kirkwall for a bit before heading back. Local flights in Britten-Norman Islanders were unaffected.

The Met Office have just upgraded their weather warning for our area to Red for wind until 0200 tomorrow. 90mph winds affecting coastal areas already apparently. Don't think I've ever seen a red warning for us before. Max wind recorded at my weather station is 81mph in December 2011.

Shirtsleeve order for log splitting and for barrowing of mature sticks for burning this weekend.
Faack! I know that I'm going to have to eat bark for a week for having said that!
When will I ever learn?

Morning all. Sun is shining, no sign of any wind (local trees not moving), today is the annual Walmart Pugilist Finals Day (aka Black Friday).
Spent yesterday putting insulation in the van. This involved cutting strips of insulating material from the roll, spraying it and the van panel with adhesive and then carefully placing the two in contact. To achieve some of this I had to remove all inner plastic panels (loads of those fancy plastic fasteners to remove) and the dog crates, apply the insulation and then replace it all. Managed to do most of the roof (easy) and the side behind the dog crates yesterday, will hopefully finish today because I need to transport a dog tomorrow. Also found the source of one of the rattles behind a panel and sorted that.
If I get time I'm going to fit an auxiliary battery and some lights so I can see what I'm doing without running down the main battery.

How about a few solar panels on top?
I am waiting for an RV with a solar panel roof and awning with a generator to help top up for nights and cloudy weather.

I love the way it crops off the tops of the windspeed graph at 60kt, as if the other stuff above doesn't matter.
Very Orkney!

That's probably the point at which the anemometer flies apart due to the forces on it. A bit like turbine or engine overspeed.Undried Plum wrote: ↑Fri Nov 26, 2021 9:24 pmhttps://www.orkneyharbours.com/dashboard

Have seen three ads for Hendrick's Gin this evening.
Any thoughts, especially from our Scotland based correspondents, as it is bottled there?

Morning folks. Is it windy all over the world today cos it sure is here. Nothing serious and clear skies. Safari camp for a few lunchtime beers. Manager is back from a 10 day safari and brought the manageress' little brother from Vic Falls for a holiday. A 21 yr old DJ!
Just heard that one of the few Brits left on Amorgos has died. The police have locked up his room and will not allow him to be buried yet. We think that it was because under Brexit he was illegal but do not know. He did have a heart problem.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
The reason why new gins are being created all over Scotland is because gin is ultra cheap to make and needs no maturing.
Whisky is less cheap to make and is very difficult to make well. Financially, it's pain in the arse as it must be matured in wooden casks for many years. It's illegal to call whisky by that name unless it's been matured for at least three years.
The only 'new' whisky that I know of is Rosebank. It's an old disused distillery which has been demolished and is being rebuilt. The shareholders have to be patient. I know because I am one!

Morning.
Windy and cold with some snow on the ground.
It was snowing quite steadily earlier on.
Woke up full of cold this morning. Performed an LFT which was negative.

Morning folks.
No wind here, clear sky and sun, but was only 7c when I went into town. It has risen to 12c now.
Lit the wood burner last night.

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
My first detachment was to Saxa Vord, in January 1974. They were still telling the tale there of the time that the radar head blew off the top of the hill some years before, shortly after the anemometer pegged at something well over 100 mph I believe. There was a radome there when I was there, but originally the head had been unprotected. The howl of the wind inside the radome blocked out all the racket coming from the radars, quite something, as the S259 I was working on at the time made a fair old row outside its cabin.llondel wrote: ↑Sat Nov 27, 2021 2:23 amThat's probably the point at which the anemometer flies apart due to the forces on it. No real sun yet, just an occasional glim through clouds.
The highest wind speed since I have been here was just round the corner at Port Bou and was 204km/h. I was walking up on the mountain that day at the Farm of the Winds, and was knocked down twice. Ended up crawling to safety on hands and knees.
