What proportion of the twenty quid was for the stories?
I could make millions in that game!

Cold here as usual. Snowline down to 200m, and precip expected around ten.

Certas engineer was here at 0930.....and, just like going to the dentist with a toothache which disappears, there was no fault with the water heating despite not having any hot water at 0700! If it happens again he's going to change the whole zone valve rather than just change the motor.....a motor change is what he did early last year when this first happened.CharlieOneSix wrote: ↑Mon Jan 23, 2023 3:41 pmArgh! No hot water....... so Certas are booked for tomorrow.......
10C, sunny, light winds and 12C forecast.

Cold, clear, sunny, windy. Wind chill -13
I am sipping steaming coffee and watching how the wind whips the snow around my yard.
I have long, open fields to the north of me, so my property is particularly prone to drifting. Most of the northern end has been 'fenced' by tree plantings or the barn.
I tried a snow fence about three years ago, which did have an effect, but not where the theory said it would.
To be fair, the theory is for an isolated fence without buildings and trees nearby.
Based on the observed fence effects, I am looking to fill the gap between barn and treelines with a firewood rack made of used pallets I finished last summer.
It is not stacked with wood yet, and only screwed and placed on blocks, so I can still move it if necessary.
I was waiting for a day like this, so I could see the streamers of drifting snow acting like smoke in a wind tunnel.
The rack is causing a light rotor to form upwind of it, as the barn does, which gives a clear patch of ground with a bank of snow forming further upwind.
So, it looks like my rack is in the right place.
The snow depth downwind is significantly less than previous years, as that snow now ends up in the upwind bank, which makes clearing my yard much easier.
So, this year, I will fill the rack with firewood and should get a yard with very little snow at all next winter.
The rack will be a two year, two row rack, with always one complete row acting as a 7 foot 'wall' to block the snow.

I would have preferred snow today instead of what we had: rain and 5° and gale. Just took the rubbish down the hill. Not a nice walk.

Just out of interest Fox, are all the forests in Canada owned and do you have to pay for your firewood, or can you just go out and cut it or gather it for free?

Re: The really boring and totally pointless snippets thread V
One of the pleasures of working from home is that one gets to spend far more time talking to one's beloved. This afternoon I have discovered she now wants to live in Powys which has come as a bit of a shock to me! Why Powys when it was the Blackwater last week? Where will it be next week? I shall keep on grinning, talking and find out I guess.

Caution: Aviation content.
Decided to go by bus to Lincoln today. As the bus was passing Harmston cross-roads, a Sentinel took off from Waddo. Thought they had been disposed of a while ago.

1DC - owned.
Much is Crown Land, and the government licenses woodcutting.
Atlantic Canada has many small privately-owned woodlots, however.
The price of logs from these private woodlots is so cheap it's not worth me buying one myself and harvesting it.
I pay $120 a cord for hardwood, and block and split it myself. It's the blocking and splitting that makes the money, or in my case saves it, as they usually charge $250 a cord for blocked, split and dried.
My chainsaw and splitter paid for themselves in less than 2 years. I treat the work as my gymnasium workouts.

Evening all,
Been a nice crisp, blue day 11c or so from the o/night low of 5c.
Recently the temperature plummeted and now, post sunset, I am back to 5c in steady rain.
Fire well lit and the Carbon monoxide detector brought into operation.
Reading zero.
One of your 'cords' would keep me burning 90% of a normal winter. that's a lot of wood.
